Cars with high resale value in the Philippines

Car buyers often overlook the resale value of a car when they purchase the vehicle, especially when it is brand new. In general, most car owners sell their vehicle anywhere from 5 to 10 years after its purchase for several reasons. One of the most compelling is their need for a new model which can be financed by the sale of their current car. Carmudi Philippines made a quick audit of the current vehicles in their database and calculated the resale value of some of the most popular models in the Philippines. Below are the cars with high resale value in the Philippines:

1. Toyota HiAce

The HiAce is a 3 or 4-door large-size van that can accommodate 12 to 15 people. It has three standout variants- the Commuter, GL Grandia and Super Grandia. Aside from being a commuter vehicle, this car is also used as an ambulance and a taxi cab. Price of new units: P1.238 million (2.5 liter Commuter Manual) to P1.995 million (2.5 liter Super Grandia Automatic 2-tone) Price of used units:  P980,000 to P1.218 million (2007 to 2012 models) Depreciation per year: P36,857 to P388,500 Rate of depreciation per year: 2.98 percent to 19.47 percent  

2. Hyundai Starex

The Starex has been one of the most iconic vans in the country for the past decade. It used to be the only car model by the South Korean brand, especially when it was first introduced locally in 2005. This van can accommodate an average of 10 to 12 people depending on its variant. Price of new units: P1.283 million (2.5 liter TCI GL Manual 10-seater) to P2.728 million (2.5 liter CRDi Limousine Automatic) Price of used units: P688,000 to P1.058 million (2005 to 2010 models) Depreciation per year: P66,111 to P197,500 Rate of depreciation per year: 5.2 percent to 10.7 percent  

3. Toyota Land Cruiser

The Land Cruiser, or colloquially known as the LC, is a 5-door, 7 to 8-seater full-size SUV which uses a powerful 4.5 liter DOHC 32-valve diesel engine which produces 278 horsepower and 650 Nm of torque. Price of new units: P4.372 million (LC200 4.5 liter Automatic) to P4.387 million (White Pearl variant) Price of used units: P3 million to P3.65 million (2009 to 2011 models) Depreciation per year: P245,667 to P274,400 Rate of depreciation per year: 5.61 percent to 6.25 percent  

4. Mitsubishi Pajero

This 5-door, 7-seater full size SUV has been known as a luxury car model with a hefty price tag making it synonymous as a ride for the rich, especially in the 90s. It has above par standard features and decent fuel efficiency. Price of new units: P2.5 million (3.8 liter V6 Gas 4WD Automatic) to P2.7 million (3.2 liter DI-D 4WD Automatic) Price of used units: P580,000 to P1.248 million (2002 to 2007 models) Depreciation per year: P160,000 to P207,428 Rate of depreciation per year: 6.4 percent to 7.7 percent  

5. Toyota Camry

This 4-door, 5-seater midsize executive sedan was first introduced in 1982 and has been one of the most iconic cars in the Japanese automaker's fleet. Price of new units: P1.455 million (2.5 G Automatic) to P2.097 million (3.5 V6 Automatic, White Pearl) Price of used units: P680,000 to 890,000 (2006 to 2012 models) Depreciation per year: P96,875 to P251,000 Rate of depreciation per year: 6.7 percent to 12 percent  

6. Honda Jazz

This 5-door, 5-seater subcompact hatchback is known as the logical choice in the small car segment thanks to its well balanced fuel efficiency and well packaged features. Price of new units: P768,000 (1.5 liter V Manual) to P948,000 (1.5 liter VX+ CVT) Price of used units: P455,000 to P700,000 (2008 to 2013) Depreciation per year: P52,167 to P248,000 Rate of depreciation per year: 6.8 percent to 26.2 percent  

7. Honda Odyssey

This 5-door minivan has one of the most flexible and customizable seating configurations that can fit at least 7 people. It was dubbed Honda’s fastest selling new car by selling more than 300,000 units on its debut release. Price of new units: P2.8 million (3.5 liter EXL Automatic) to P2.82 million (White Pearl variant) Price of used units: P1.6 million (2008 models) Depreciation per year: P200,000 Rate of depreciation per year: 7.1 percent  

8. Ford Explorer

The Explorer is a 5-door, 7-seater full-size SUV whose line was first marketed in 1990. This vehicle is regarded as the every man’s SUV because of its affordable price. Price of new units: P2.445 million (2.0 liter 4x2 Limited w/ Ecoboost) to P2.695 million (3.5 liter 4x4 Limited +) Price of used units: P450,000 to P650,000 (2004 to 2006 models) Depreciation per year: P199,500 to P255,625 Rate of depreciation per year: 8.2 percent to 9.5 percent  

9. Honda Civic

This compact or small family car has a 4-door sedan body style and can seat five people. It is known for its low running cost, reliability and upscale features. Price of new units: P987,000 (1.8 liter S variant) to P1.388 million (2.0 liter EL Mugen, White Pearl) Price of used units: P780,000 to P850,00 (2012 to 2013 models) Depreciation per year: P103,500 to P538,000 Rate of depreciation per year: 10 percent to 38.8 percent  

10. Honda Accord

The Accord is a 4-door, 5-seater midsize executive sedan which has a price similar to an entry level luxury sedan. It is known for its powerful 2.4 liter or 3.5 liter gasoline engines which provide 177 horsepower and 271 horsepower, respectively. Price of new units: P1.72 million (2.4 liter S Automatic) to P2.117 million (3.5 liter SV V6 Automatic) Price of used units: P580,000 to P1.42 million (2008 to 2013 models) Depreciation per year: P190,000 to P697,000 Rate of depreciation per year: 11 percent to 33 percent -- *The above "partial results" are just a calculation of the resale value of the aforementioned car models based on Carmudi Philippines' database. Not included in the study are luxury cars such as BMW, Porsche, and Ferrari.
