New and Used Volvo S40 for Sale Philippines
The quiet luxury car – that’s what they say about the Volvo S40. We highly agree, but then again, we’re not surprised here. The S40 is typical of Volvo’s style: understated without looking drab; classy without looking too ostentatious. Many people look at it and think it’s a solid and wholesome car, but don’t be deceived by its conservative exterior. Yes, it may indeed look quite laidback compared to other flashy cars, but this vehicle is a serious performer on the road.
The S40 is a compact car produced by the Swedish company Volvo Cars from 1995 to 2012. It was replaced by the Volvo 40 five-door hatchback in 2012. The first generation premiered at the Frankfurt Motor Show, while the second generation was introduced in Belgium. The latter had a new design, and was well-received by the public. In fact, it won the Canadian Car of the Year Best New Sport Compact in 2005, and was nominated for the World Car of the Year award and the South African Car of the Year for 2005 during the same year. It had a smaller interior, which is patterned after the "smaller without getting less" philosophy that Volvo espoused.
Many of its parts from the second generation were created by Volvo, but this vehicle also shares similar architecture with the Mazda 3 and the next-generation Ford Focus. Mazda, Ford, and Volvo engineers teamed up to create the Ford C1 platform, which became known as "global shared technologies". This collaboration allowed the three giant car companies to share the same underbody, steering, suspension layouts, etc.
The S40 had a mid-cycle facelift in 2008, and was then replaced by Volvo V40 in 2012. Despite being discontinued, some of its warranties are still being honored, particularly units sold from March 2010 or later. So keep this in mind the next time you buy a 2nd hand Volvo S40. Some of its closest rivals include: the Audi A4, Mercedes Benz C Class, and BMW 3 Series.

Volvo S40 Review in the Philippines
Volvo S40 Specs and Performance
What sets the Volvo S40 Philippines apart is how it's made. It gets the best of both worlds--combining the stability and precision that most German cars are known for together with the maneuverability and ease that comes with many European-made vehicles. Keep in mind, however, that the S40's 2.45 liter engine is meant for highway cruising, not for racing across drag strips. It makes around 227 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque (5000 rpm), and gives good acceleration without excessively revving up the engine. In fact, it can go from rest to 60mpg in 7.1 seconds. Not bad.
Volvo S40 Fuel Consumption
Volvo is known for being an advocate of environmental responsibility, although in this case, we think they sort of missed that part in their manual when they created the S40. This car’s carbon emissions and fuel consumption rates are high, and not as efficient as we would like it to be.
Second hand Volvo S40 fuel consumption:
- Volvo S40 2012: 5.7 l/100km
- Volvo S40 2010: 5.7 l/100km
- Volvo S40 2009: 9.1 l/100km
- Volvo S40 2008: 6.9 l/100km
- Volvo S40 2007: 8.5 l/100km
- Volvo S40 2006: 9.1 l/100km
Volvo S40 Features
Volvo S40 Convenience and Entertainment Features
Comfort and safety is one of the S40's strengths, and we're not really surprised here. In our opinion, Volvo comes almost close to perfecting both these features, and we won't be surprised if they'll one day set the standard on how these features should be made.
The S40 offers smooth driving and good handling, especially along country roads or highways. Of course, many sport sedans boast of far better performance, but considering it was made two decades ago makes it certainly one impressive vehicle, nonetheless.
- Multi-link rear setup
- Sirius Satellite Radio
- Power driver's seat
- Trip computer
- Climate controls
- Storage bin
Volvo S40 Safety Features
Safety is the middle name of Volvo—or maybe even the first or last. There’s no denying that this brand has a stellar reputation when it comes to vehicle safety, and they’ve been generous with this feature in the S40 as well.
- Emergency brake lights
- LED rear lights
- Anti-lock brakes
- Electronic stability
- Traction control
- Blind Spot System (optional)
Volvo S40 Design
Volvo S40 Interior
You can easily see traces of Scandinavian influences once you get inside the car, such as intense contrasts between dark and light trim and matte-metallic surface trimmings on the center stack are just some of them. The quality and care added to the interior look are also Scandinavian. We especially love the aluminum treatment they added (which is true aluminum, by the way) and the floating center console. Warning: you will have a problem with the cramped backseat if you're height is six feet (or more). It will also be a problem if you have a large family. The most it can accommodate is 5 (you’re pushing it too far if you’re vertically—or horizontally big here), or 6 (if your passengers are perpetually starving themselves, or are mostly kids).
- New center console
- Door panel design
- Improved air vents
- Repositioned clock
- More storage compartments
- Power front passenger seat
Volvo S40 Exterior
While we admit that the S40's design looks too standard for our taste, we still think that it can still compete with the most well-built small sport sedans we have today. Keep in mind that it was introduced two decades ago, and its athletic design was unique in its own right. Fast forward to today, and many cars now sport that same feature. It can even look better than most if you add the large alloy wheels, well-made detailing, side skirts, and rear spoilers. The S40 is also one of the pioneers of the "floating" center stack. In fact, many say that its instrument panel was way ahead of its time--and we couldn't agree more.
- Large wheel arches
- 17-inch Spartacus wheels
- Front fog lights
- Power moon roof
- Color-coordinated side sills
- Sport body kit
Volvo S40 Color Options
Subaru Legacy offers various colors that you can choose from. These include:
- Passion Red
- Ice White
- Black Stone
- Rebel Blue
- Bright Silver
- Raw Copper
