Volvo S60

Volvo is a Swedish vehicle manufacturer focused on producing sedans, coupes and Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs). The company also has a line of construction equipment, trucks and buses. The brand is synonymous with the safety its vehicles offer.

Short History

Founded in 1927 by Gustaf Larsson and Assar Gabrielsson, Volvo has been one of the global pioneers in passenger safety. Their first vehicle, the Volvo O4, was nicknamed “the Jakob." Two years after, they released the six-cylinder PV651 and by 1931, was able to produce more than 10,000 Volvos.

Ford acquired Volvo in 1998. the Swedish automaker improved the safety features of most Ford models while having the financial backing of the US car producer. In 2010, however, Ford sold Volvo to Chinese automotive producer Geely to ease up its financial troubles.

Technology

By the 1950’s, Volvo expanded their market in the United States. The compact-sized and stylish PV444 established its name in the US market. Continuing its mark of impressive passenger safety standards, Volvo was first to include the three-point safety belt on their vehicles.

The following decades, Volvo was known as the trend-setter of car safety features as it produced technologies such as front and rear energy resistant crumple zones, padded dashboards, childproof locks, rear facing child seats, and collapsible steering columns.
