2018 Ford Expedition: Bigger, Smarter, Better

Nobody can deny the large size of Ford Expedition, what with it currently holding the title of Ford’s biggest SUV in their stable. But it seems that the automaker has finally decided to up the ante, as it recently unveiled a beefier, more powerful, and more feature-packed Expedition. Honestly? It has been a long time coming.

What’s new?

It’s definitely bigger, but if you’re worried about weight, rest assured that the all-new Expedition is by no means heavy. The only thing that it’s heavy on is its tech features. For this year, Ford gives us more than 40 reasons to love this SUV, including its new convenient technological features. One of the things that we liked about the batch of new updates is that power won’t be a problem anymore. You can go crazy with the new four 12-volt power points, a 110-volt power outlet, and six USB chargers. Updates on the vehicle also consist of the new Wi-Fi hotspot, a dual-headrest rear seat entertainment system, a premium 12-speaker audio system, SYNC® 3 with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, an adjustable shelf behind the third row, and a panoramic vista roof that spans for two rows. Additionally, the new Expedition is more capable and smart with new several assistive technologies in store, such as the all-new Terrain Management System, Pro Trailer Backup Assist, class-exclusive enhanced active park assist, and a 360-degree camera technology. And what’s more, the Expedition 2018’s entertainment system, known as EVO, allows drivers and passengers to stream live TV shows and sports games through its innovative SlingPlayer software- things just got a lot more interesting.

This SUV still rocks its fully-boxed truck roots, losing 300 pounds thanks to its redesigned high-strength steel frame and new aluminum-alloy body. At a glance, this one looks more like a big Ford Explorer than the Ford F-150 it based its platform on. Nevertheless, the 2018 Ford Expedition takes styling cues from both vehicles and the others from the company. Gone is the three-barred chrome front grille from the outgoing model. Instead, there’s a rectangular chrome outline in the center of the new chrome grille that extends slightly to the headlight section. The headlights, on the other hand, closely resemble that of the 2018 Ford F-150. In our opinion, the 2018 Ford Expedition looks nice.

Under the hood

The new Expedition shares many things with the F-150, and for this year, Ford adds its 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine to the list. Power-wise, Motor1 has stated that “the updated EcoBoost engine is potentially good for 400 hp (298 kW) and 480 lb-ft (651 Nm) of torque,” though they are not sure about it as the American carmaker has kept mum on the details. Although there are no confirmed details on the power as of now, Ford claims that the latest SUV in their stable is the most powerful Expedition to date. Paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, the company also promises the all-new Expedition to deliver the best towing capability of any full-size SUV on the market.

A step inside the Ford Expedition 2018

The new Expedition offers seats for eight, but that’s not all. Given its size, the interior is expected to be spacious and generous in legroom. Feature-wise, Ford gives us several things to be excited about, and among these includes the new sliding second-row seat with tip-and-slide functionality which can make access to the third row easier even with a child safety seat installed. Ford claims the 2018 Expedition is the first full-size vehicle to have it. The new Expedition is generous in cargo space, as well. If you find yourself needing more space for luggage, just push a button and the second and third-row seats can be folded flat. For the new Expedition MAX, there’s an additional 16.8 cu. ft. of cargo and more head and legroom for the last row.

The 2018 Ford Expedition will be available in four trims: XLT, Limited, Platinum, and an XL version for fleet customers such as from law enforcement and emergency services. Ford says these trims will also be available on the Expedition MAX. Sales of the new Expedition in the US will begin in their fall season.
