Audi E-Tron Electric Car to Ditch Conventional Side Mirrors
We are in the age where automobiles are evolving into a smarter and more environment-friendly machines.
It's becoming clearer that the future of mobility leans toward electrification. Manufacturers are continuously introducing its latest innovation when it comes to electric cars. Among them is Audi, and the German automaker will launch the production model of its E-Tron electric car this year.
Launching a new electric car is nothing new but what caught our attention was Audi's confirmation that the E-Tron will ditch the conventional side mirrors for cameras. Audi calls it the virtual exterior mirrors and are said to be narrower than the standard mirrors.
The virtual mirrors are not just for 'porma' (show-off) purposes as these give the E-Tron a couple of positive things. It managed to reduce the vehicle width by 15 centimeters (5.9 inches) and the shape of the virtual mirrors is said to reduce drag as well as minimize wind noise.
Audi says this mirrors can give three different views--highway driving, turning, and parking. While Audi's virtual mirrors sound cool and could well be the trend in the future, we can't help but think on how it will perform in the Philippine setting. Can the camera detect motorcycles or bicycles that weave in and out of traffic? It may, however, thwart of turn away the 'Baklas Side Mirror Gang' or criminal elements who steal the side mirrors and fence them in places like Banawe in Quezon City or Evangelista in Makati City.
