Boxing Legend Muhammad Ali's Rolls-Royce Up for Sale
Don’t look now, but late boxing icon Muhammad Ali's Rolls-Royce is up for auction at Bonhams’ Zoute Sale in Belgium this month.
The car, which is a 1970 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow Mulliner Park Ward convertible, was bought by the boxing champ for an estimated USD16,000 when he was still using his birth name, Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr.
The controversial fighter, who changed his "slave name" Cassius to Muhammad Ali after winning the world heavyweight championship from Sonny Liston, bought the car the same year he recovered his boxing license in 1971.
It can be remembered that Ali was suspended in 1966 after refusing to enter the armed services during the Vietnam War for his religious beliefs. He was arrested, found guilty of draft evasion charges, and stripped off his boxing title completely. He regained back his license only after four years.
Prior to his arrest, Ali was considered one of the leading heavyweight boxers of the 20th century. His record of beating 21 boxers for the world heavyweight title, and 14 unified title bouts were unbeaten for 35 years.
An Avid Car Collector
The boxing champ, who owned numerous Rolls-Royce vehicles, sold this particular Silver Shadow model to a buyer from Holland. It was meticulously restored to its original state, even leaving the optional headrests in their original place.
The estimated price of the vehicle is around USD46,000 to USD70,000, or PHP2.5 to PHP3.8 million. You can learn more about it by visiting Bonhams's website.
Not the first time
This isn't the first time that one of Muhammad Ali's cars have been auction. In fact, one of his cars has also been auctioned at Barett-Jackson's auction house just this September. The vehicle was Ali's silver 1976 Alfa Romeo Spider, which sold for USD23,100 or PHP1.3 million.
