A nameplate that's been in production since 1964, the
10 millionth Ford Mustang has rolled out of Ford's Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Michigan today--a
GT Convertible clad in
Wimbledon White with a
460 horsepower (hp), 5.0-liter V8 engine and a
six-speed manual drivetrain combination and equipped with the latest driver assist technology.
The look of the milestone Mustang model actually echoes that of the first serialized Ford Mustang produced in 1964 with the
much-valued VIN 001, which was also a white convertible but with a
164 hp V8 and a
three-speed manual transmission under the hood.
"Mustang is the heart and soul of this company and a favorite around the world," said
Jim Farley, president
of global markets,
Ford Motor Company. "I get the same thrill seeing a Mustang roll down a street in Detroit, London or Beijing that I felt when I bought my first car--a 1966 Mustang coupe that I drove across the country as a teenager. Mustang is a smile-maker in any language."
During its
54-year production history, the Mustang also was built in San Jose, California, Metuchen, New Jersey, and the original Mustang production facility in Dearborn, Michigan.
Now on its sixth generation, the Ford Mustang is also
America's best-selling sports car of the
last 50 years, the
world's best-selling sports car for
three years straight, and its very own Facebook page reportedly has more likes than any other vehicle nameplate.
To mark the occasion of the milestone production, Ford organized a parade of
more than 60 Mustangs--including VIN 001 and Dearborn Police's own Mustang--which drove from the Ford headquarters in Detroit, Michigan to the Flat Rock Assembly Plant as the 10 millionth Mustang rolled off the line.
