Land Rover Will Launch Its First Car in 2019
Porsche is a name synonymous with sports cars. Recently though, the brand started branching out to make SUVs and crossovers (the Cayenne and the Macan, respectively), which are the more popular selling models these days. Land Rover is about to do the same thing, but the biggest surprise of all is, they are doing it in reverse. A renowned maker of rugged all-terrain vehicles, Jaguar Land Rover looks to build its first car and release it before the decade closes. Land Rover’s first production vehicle, which has the working name 'Road Rover,' will be a luxury all-electric sedan that will target upscale markets in the US and China.
A direct S-Class competitor
The Road Rover is aimed to compete with the bestselling Mercedes-Benz S-Class in terms of luxury and build. True to the Land Rover name however, the car will still retain some of the 'all-terrain' capabilities that the British marque is known for. To entice a larger market, the car will also be tuned for speed. Land Rover's electric car is being developed alongside the upcoming model set to replace the Jaguar XJ. Both cars will be using the same platform, which is a new-generation aluminum architecture that can hold both battery packs and piston engines. Aside from being pure electric vehicles, both cars will also feature twin electric motors and on-demand all-wheel drive. Land Rover intends to bank on the success of the S-Class, which managed to prove that SUVs have not completely pushed super-luxury saloon cars by the wayside. The British company plans to unveil the S-Class competitor at the 2019 LA Auto Show with a $100,000 price tag attached. Not alone
The Road Rover is not meant to be a lone model. Land Rover plans to develop the name into a line of diverse on-road vehicles infused with the off-road ruggedness that have made them popular through the years. Whether or not the Road Rover will have its own standalone design language has not been confirmed. However, it is expected to have height-adjustable suspension, a range of at least 482 kilometers, and a 0-100 kph time of under 5 seconds.Featured Articles
