Man Gets Carnapped while Sleeping Inside His Vehicle
It's a nightmare when your vehicle gets car-napped, but when you're inside your car sleeping while it's actually getting stolen, then that's a double whammy on its own.
According to News24.com, musician Justin Koerner dreamt of someone jumping in the front seat of his car as he slept on the rear seat.
He thought it was a dream, but when he woke up and saw car treads on a lawn and a destroyed bush, he realized it was actually real.
According to Koerner, the police "appeared ready to take him away before another officer said a neighbor had security camera footage of the incident." He was eventually saved by the said neighbor's security camera that caught the incident.
Police statement said that the robber drove the car Sunday morning and stopped after he saw Koerner sleeping at the back of the car. It crashed afterwards.
Carnapping Statistics
Koerner's case, although unique, is a common crime in the U.S. Carnapping incidences there have been increasing since 2017, although it has decreased significantly compared to the 90s.
The carnapping trend in the Philippines is similar, but generally with a much better outlook. According to then-Philippine National Police's (PNP) Chief Director General Ronald dela Rosa, there was a reported 40- to almost 50-percent decrease in incidents of motorcycle and car theft in 2017.
The PNP-Highway Patrol Group also reported that there were 7,517 vehicles that were stolen in different parts of the country in 2017. Among those stolen, 6,956 were motorcycles while the rest were motorized vehicles.
