Need to Lose Weight? Meet the World's First Calorie-Burning Car

You will never, ever feel guilty of eating that humongous plate of sisig again once you drive the world's first calorie-burning car: the FitCar PPV. Probably more excruciating than driving a manual car during traffic, this pedal-powered vehicle replaces the accelerator pedal on your vehicle, making you work your entire legs so you burn calories faster.

Created by a Saudi-based inventor Nasser Al Shawaf, and Dutch engineering partner BPO, this calves annihilating/calorie-burning vehicle is based on a 2.0 liter Audi A4 Avant.

The major modification here can  be found on its throttle, which is replaced by a bicycle pedal mechanism. There's a flywheel linked to the mechanism which engages the accelerator, so the harder you pedal, the faster the car accelerates--which helps you lose more weight in the process. And forget brake pedals--they're now replaced by a 'push hand control' for "easier maneuvering."

The FitCar PPV comes in three simple settings: 'Drive Slow,' which is for slow moving traffic; 'Drive Fast' helps you pedal your way on the highways; and 'No Drive' which keeps the car still while you continue exercising using the pedals. Similar to a regular, stationary bicycle, you can even adjust its rotary dial on the pedals to increase resistance.

Waste of commuting time

According to Al Shawaf, he came up with the idea while commuting in many cities around the world.

"I work in many cities around the world where a 60-minute-plus car commute, each-way, each day is not uncommon,” he said. "This is an unhealthy way to waste more than two hours every day. So, I came up with the idea of the FitCar--which does exactly the same as any conventional car--getting us safely and comfortably from A to B, however in the FitCar you can exercise while you drive."

Healthier living while driving

The FitCar PPV is still evolving, and there are still improvements and add-ons they're currently studying.

"Our ambition is for the technology to be either adopted by a car manufacturer for a new generation of 'healthier' city cars, or for us simply to offer it as a conversion kit to the after-market for those wishing to add PPV as an optional active extra to their car," shared Al Shawaf.

The FitCar PPV helps you burn 300 calories in 30 minutes. That's quite promising, to say the least.

"We are increasingly time-poor, and unfit, and the FitCar PPV provides at least part of the solution to these two problems for those of us wishing to exercise more but without the time to do it. I'm really proud of the results," Al Shawaf added.

Now, if only they can invent a mechanism that will prevent you from looking drenched with perspiration afterwards, then that would make bathing in office bathrooms all the more worth it.
