Porsche to Begin Assembly of Taycan, Approves Production of Mission E Cross Turismo

Porsche Taycan
The electrification of Porsche has begun as it not only will soon start the production of the Porsche Taycan, its first purely-electric electric sports car, but it will also produce a four-door version of it in the Mission E Cross Turismo. "We predict that over 50 percent of Porsche models delivered from 2025 will be electrified," said Lutz Meschke, deputy chairman of the Executive Board and member of the board responsible for Finance and IT at Porsche. "In addition to efficient processes, the revenue from digital products and services should also increasingly contribute to our economic success." For the production of the Taycan alone, Porsche invested EUR6 billion in it and hired 1,200 new employees, making the vehicle one of the biggest job creators in Porsche's history. To make the production of the Taycan more efficient, its production and assembly facilities are a "factory within a factory" at the main plant in Zuffenhausen. And following the "smart, lean, green" concept, Porsche is also pursuing a resource-friendly production, with the manufacture of the Taycan being carbon-neutral and with the the future goal of Porsche production to be a zero-impact factory, or a a factory with no environmental impact. Like the Porsche 919 Hybrid, the Taycan is powered by an 800-volt system via a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery. Specifically developed by Porsche to "the limits of what is technically feasible," the vehicle's electric drivetrain can be recharged in only four minutes and provide a range of up to 100 kilometers. The German carmaker adds that what it has learned with the development of the Taycan's systems will be useful when it joins the Formula E series in the 2019-2020 season.

Porsche Mission E Cross Turismo

As for the Mission E Cross Turismo, Porsche foresees its production as creating 300 additional jobs at its headquarters in Zuffenhausen. Like the Taycan, the four-door Cross Turismo has an 800-volt architecture, has a system output of 600 hp and a range of 500 km and is prepared for connection to the fast charging network. To ensure that both the Taycan and Cross Turismo will never run out of power, Porsche will build 400 high-power charging stations with a capacity of 350kW per charging point across Europe by the end of 2019 while in the  United States, the VW Group initiative Electrify America will see the installation of charging infrastructures with capacity of up to 350kW at 300 motorway stations from 2019. In addition, as the Taycan's launch draws closer, Porsche plans to install more than 2000 AC charging points at destinations such as hotels in up to 20 markets. Lastly, customers will be able to gain access to the Porsche charging network via the Porsche charging service, a Europe-wide solution with access to a huge array of charging stations managed by different service providers, with Porsche taking care of all billing centrally.
