Revised 2018 Subaru Legacy Set for Release Before Year Ends
Sometimes, car makers tempt you with their future offerings near the date of release, and sometimes when it’s still a long way away. For the 2018 Legacy midsize sedan, Subaru decided to take the latter route. The Japanese car brand debuts the 2018 Subaru Legacy at the 2017 Chicago Auto Show this week, imbuing the model with some cosmetic upgrades front and back. The new Legacy also receives significant upgrades to more than a few comfort, safety, and infotainment systems.
Keeping up with the times
Part of the Legacy’s sixth-generation, this 2018 model brings with it changes that help keep it competitive in the midsize sedan department. Aiming for a sportier look, Subaru gives the new Legacy a refreshed front bumper, plus wider and lower grille openings to match. The headlights are redesigned as well, and feature the “Konoji” LED daytime running lights. LED lighting also finds its way in the front fog lights.
The tailpipe gets a slight modification, as it is now integrated into the lower fascia. New wheel designs and two new exterior color choices—Magnetite Gray Metallic and Crimson Pearl—further enhance the Legacy’s sporty appeal.
Under the hood
The 2018 Legacy hosts two engine types. A 2.5-liter 4-cylinder power plant is in the engine bay of the 2.5i model. Meanwhile, a 3.6-liter, 6-cylinder turbine powers the 3.6R trim. The 2.5-liter maxes at 175 hp, while the 3.6R dishes 256 hp. Both engines come mated to the Lineartronic CVT (continuously variable transmission) with paddle shift control switches and manual mode. Subaru retools the CVT’s control unit this time around, giving the CVT more smoothness and responsiveness upon acceleration.
Enhancing the 2018 Subaru Legacy’s safety and comfort
The new Legacy adds a few nifty driver-assist features, including new Steering Responsive Headlights (SRH). The system helps aim the headlights into a turn as the driver steers the vehicle. Addressing engine noise, an ultra-short pitch chain and adjusted engine timing under acceleration helps keep the Legacy powertrain quieter than ever. Subaru also retooled the Legacy’s chassis to increase the 2018’s driving comfort.
A bit of retuning in the suspension system enhances the sedan’s agility, steering, and brake feel. Upgraded dampers reduce initial impact from bumps and minimize body rolls as the Legacy makes its turns.
Standard safety features include Reverse Automatic Braking, EyeSight Driver Assist technology, Pre-Collision Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control, Vehicle Lane Departure Warning, and Lane Keep Assist. Safety additions include Blindspot Detection/Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Change Assist, and automatic door locks.
Interior updates
Inside the 2018 Subaru Legacy cabin, the tweaks come plenty. Premium materials, an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and new-look center console begins the proceedings. Those who grow tired of faux-stitching will find the real stitching on the dashboard and door panels a welcoming sight. A high-gloss black trim and silver-colored bezels lend the controls a more elegant feel. An improved air conditioning system can now cool the cabin quicker and more evenly. Temperature setting indicators are now relocated in the control dials for improved utility.
The 2018 Subaru Legacy is scheduled for a summer release in North America. As for when it hits local shores, media sources say it may happen before the end of the year.
