Seven Ways to Improve Your Gas Mileage

The money required to purchase a car is large enough without having to worry about how much its maintenance costs will be. However, most car owners worry about other extra factors that could influence their vehicle's running behavior a few months after they have bought their car. The most common "extra cost" associated with running a car is fuel cost. Most people are unaware of the small things that they can do in order to reduce fuel cost significantly. Carmudi has come up with some tips to help you save money the next time you find yourself in a gas station.

Step 1 - Slow Down

Travelling near 90 kph can give you up to 21 percent more on gas mileage compared to travelling at 105 kph. In addition, traffic lights are timed for lower speeds so it will be more difficult to stop; more gas wasted.  

Step 2 - Get Regular Tune Ups

Always get your car tuned-up and pay special attention to your air filters. A dirty air filter reduces air flow, which in turn wastes gas.  

Step 3 - Avoid Idling

Keeping your car on idle mode actually uses more gas than stopping and restarting your car. Turn your car off when waiting for someone or going to fast food places instead of using the drive thru. Note: Don't bother warming up your car in the winter; it's not necessary with today's technology.  

Step 4 - Go Easy on Both Gas and Brakes

Anytime you do a jack rabbit start or quick stop it decreases your gas mileage.  

Step 5 - Weight Decreases Car Mileage

Clean up your car of unnecessary things and certain items that will increase its overall weight. Note: Instead of transporting your luggage using the roof rack, put it in the trunk or cargo space to reduce its drag.  

Step 6 - Travel on Paved Roads

Dirt, gravel and off-road terrains can reduce gas mileage by as much as 30 percent.  

Step 7 - Invest in a Hybrid Car
