Toyota Avanza Overview
The category of modern compact MPVs is witnessing all-time high popularity in the Philippines car market, and the Toyota Avanza was undoubtedly one of the first movers in the segment. The most affordable MPV from Toyota Philippines portfolio, the Toyota Avanza focuses on those who want a small and affordable MPV car that can miss out on the latest of contemporary features but should not compromise on the core traits of practicality and reliability.
Toyota Avanza History
The story of the Toyota Avanza in the Philippines car market goes all the way back to 2006 when the first-ever generation of the Avanza was launched here, three years after its global unveil. The MPV was launched in two different variants, E and G, both of which were powered by a 1.3-litre petrol engine with a manual gearbox. This version got a minor facelift in 2008, with a new grille and revamped interior cabin, but no changes to its powertrain.
The second generation of the Toyota Avanza replaced its predecessor in the year 2012, with a heavily revised exterior styling and interior cabin. There were three different variants this time – J, E, and G, with an optional automatic gearbox introduced in the latter two variants. This generation of the Avanza received subsequent facelifts in 2015 and 2019, with the 2019 version receiving new features like touchscreen infotainment system and heavily revised front end with LED variants, and a new top-spec variant by the name Veloz.
Toyota Avanza Highlight
The current facelifted second generation of the Toyota Avanza ditches the too simple and bare-bones appeal of the erstwhile versions of the MPV, which is quite evident from the way it looks, especially front the front. The split grille and headlamp theme have definitely made the Avanza look very striking.
The Toyota Avanza is now being offered in a total of four different variants – J, E, G, and Veloz. There are two engine options for the Toyota Avanza – while the J and E variants get a 1.3-litre four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine (95 PS of power and 121 Nm of torque), the G and Veloz get a 1.5-litre four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine (103 PS of power and 136 Nm of torque). Also, while the J and E variants get a 5-speed manual gearbox, the E, G, and Veloz get a 4-speed automatic gearbox.
Toyota Avanza Safety
The Toyota Avanza is pitched as a budget MPV that has been engineered to a cost-conscious segment. This is the reason why the Toyota Avanza gets only the bare essential safety features like dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, reverse parking sensors, and reverses camera.
Toyota Avanza Fuel Consumption
For a 1.5-litre petrol engine, the Toyota Avanza offers decent levels of fuel economy of around 16.2 kmpl for the manual variant and 14.6 kmpl for the automatic ones. The 1.3-litre variants are slightly more fuel-efficient at 16.8 kmpl.

Toyota Avanza Pros and Cons
Toyota Avanza Pros
- Easy to run and maintain – Thanks to Toyota’s bulletproof reliability factor, the Toyota Avanza is one compact MPV that is easy to run and maintain.
- Great sense of space and seating comfort – For a compact MPV, the Toyota Avanza is surprisingly comfortable and spacious, even in the third row of seats.
- Bold front styling – With the 2019 update, the Toyota Avanza is now one striking-looking vehicle from the front, with the bold grille and split LED headlamps working in its favor.
Toyota Avanza Cons
- Drab interior cabin – While Toyota has worked on the exterior quite well, the interior cabin continues to look as drab and frills-free as ever, with limited features onboard making it feel like a basic vehicle.
- Lackluster engine options – Both the 1.3 and 1.5 petrol engines lack character when it comes to driveability.
