Senator Poe Meets with LTFRB, Uber Heads
Senator Grace Poe arranged a closed-door meeting today, August 16, with the heads of both the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) and Uber to shed light on the ride-sharing app’s suspension. The ‘urgent’ meeting comes after the government agency ordered Uber to cease its operations for one month for violating an LTFRB order.

LTFRB chair Martin Delgra III and spokesperson Atty. Aileen Lizada represent LTFRB in the meeting. Meanwhile, among those attending the meeting for Uber include Regional General Manager Mike Brown and Regional Regulatory Lead Ben Brooks as well as Uber Philippines General Manager and Government Relations and Public Policy heads Laurence Cua and Yves Gonzalez, respectively.
LTFRB ordered Uber’s one-month suspension starting August 14 after the ride hailing firm violated LTFRB’s directive last July 26 to deactivate drivers who registered in their systems after June 30, 2017, and to cease accepting and activating new drivers into its platform.

Uber resumes, ceases operations
Uber managed to resume operations noontime yesterday after filing a motion for reconsideration asking the LTFRB to reconsider its month-long suspension order. However, the ride-sharing company was again compelled to cease its operations around 6 PM, after LTFRB denied its motion with a three-page decision. The decision contained text that insisted LTFRB’s order stands and warned Uber that it faces sanctions if it continues to defy the regulatory agency. Uber expressed disappointment with the denial of its motion, but said it was ready to comply with the order.Public outrage
LTFRB’s suspension order received the ire of the public, especially on social media. The outrage prompted several lawmakers to weigh in on the issue. Poe called the suspension “cruel and absurd.” “I am aghast that this agency that committed before the Senate to resolve the issues has just imposed a cure that will only make the disease much worse,” Poe said in a statement late Monday night. Poe is the chair of the Senate Committee on Public Services.Featured Articles
