The Volkswagen ID.Life is a cinema and gaming lounge on wheels
The ID. Life is Volkswagen's vision of a small EV for the city, which is expected to cost €20,000 (around P1.185 million) as the baby of the ID. range.
Presented at the IAA Mobility 2021 in Germany, the ID.Life showed off its party tricks that might gain attention from its intended customers. “In creating the ID. Life, we have consistently focused on the needs of younger customers," Volkswagen CEO Ralf Brandstätter said.
"The customer of tomorrow won’t simply want to get from A to B; they will be much more interested in the experiences that a car can offer," he added. The small EV is slated to arrive in 2025.
Those experiences start inside the cabin, which can be converted into a cinema or gaming lounge. The vehicle comes with a video game console and projector, as well as a projection screen that extends from the dash panel. Other devices can be connected as needed to the 230-volt power supply.
The front-and rear seat bench can be completely folded down to create cinema seating, a bed measuring around two meters in length, or to make the ID.Life into a cargo van. Like the exterior, the ID.Life's seats and other interior materials are made from recycled materials.
Meanwhile, driving functions can be controlled via a touch panel on the hexagonal steering wheel, and there's no integrated infotainment system. Occupants have to place their phones and tablets onto a dock, and use the devices for music and navigation.
The ID.Life is based on a smaller variant of Volkswagen’s modular electric drive matrix (MEB), which features front-wheel drive for the first time. With the car's 234hp electric motor, zero-to-100kph is done in 6.9 seconds. The 57 kWh battery enables a range of some 400 kilometers.
