Where Breastfriends Meet

Three women from different walks of life share their close encounters with the Big C, and their transformation into fearless breast cancer warriors. They were among the close to 40 charity patients served at the first medical mission of the Alagang Breastfriend Mobile Diagnostic Clinic, the first of its kind in the country.

How did you discover that you had cancer?

Aileen: At first, wala akong naramdaman. That was 2013. Nasa Dubai ako noon (as) an OFW. Wala akong symptoms, wala akong bleeding. (Nagpa-lab test ako), nagpa-pregnancy test pa nga ako. Sabi nila, seven months pregnant ako. Then, at the last minute, sabi nila, 'You are at Stage 4 cancer, ovarian. Go home and have an operation immediately.' I went home in 2016.

How has the UP-PGH Cancer Institute helped you?

Aileen: OFW ako. Wala akong pera, so nasa charity ako. Sabi sa akin ng duktor, “Maghanda ka ng P10-15,000 for the operation.” Ang mister ko, madiskarte, so napa-sponsor kami ng PGH sa new bill balance (NBB) ng PhilHealth. Yung NBB ko, libre lahat, pati room. Yung two months chemo, sponsored ng NBB.

Emma: In my 36 years of service sa Cancer Institute, marami akong nakilalang pasyenteng may cancer--cervical, ovarian, endometrial, breast.... You assist them. You encourage them.

Best advice for Filipinas on breast cancer awareness

First thing is, maging malapit tayo kay Lord.... Panalo tayo.'

On the #AlagangBFF Mobile Diagnostic Clinic

Aileen: I am still on chemotherapy for ovarian cancer (pero) sabi ng duktor, 'There is a possibility that you have a risk for breast (cancer).' Kaya nagkainteres akong magpa-checkup.

Emma: Galing akong night duty. Sa buong buhay ko, first time kong magpa-test.
