Used motorcycles in Calabarzon

Yamaha YRB

Calabarzon, the country’s premier industrial and commercial region, owes much of its progress to its proximity to Metro Manila. Its provinces of Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon have a large concentration of vehicles that interact daily with a population of more than 12 million people.

Motorcycles are the most common type of vehicle, not only in Calabarzon, but also in the country. Tricycles, a modified motorcycle with a fabricated passenger cabin or “side car” on its right side, are the most common type of motorcycle in the region. These vehicles serve as public utility vehicles that transport paid passengers in and out of towns and subdivisions. The Honda TMX is an example of a motorcycle that can be turned into a tricycle.

Choosing the right second hand motorcycle

Used vehicles are a great bargain because they are cheaper than brand new units. However, there are issues potential buyers should be aware of such as the general condition of a second hand unit and the damages it may have acquired under its previous owners.

When choosing a second hand motorcycle from a dealer, one must first consider what type of vehicle he or she wants. Touring and cruisers are less likely to have damage compared to dirt bikes and sportbikes. On the other hand, scooters and business-type motorcycles are more prone to minor road accidents, explaining some of the dents that are visible on many units.

A motorcycle buyer must first research the specifications of the motorcycle they want. Take a checklist with you to remind you of what parts of the motorcycle to check, such as the chain, which should have ¾ inches of play (up and down) with its sprocket still in good condition. Never be shy to ask questions about the motorcycle.

Private dealers vs. professional dealers

Second hand motorcycles can be bought from two types of dealers: a professional dealer and a private dealer. Buying from a private dealer means it is possible to haggle and get the price down although you do run the risk of having less information about the motorbike, either because the owner does not know the answers to your queries or they are hiding it.

In contrast, professional dealers will fight for the sticker price of the vehicle as they earn through commission. On the upside, these types of dealers know a lot about motorcycles and could inform you of the things you need to know about the vehicle, such as its features and service history.
