Toyota Innova Overview
Since its inception back in 2006, the Toyota Innova has been inarguably one of the best-selling MPV car in the Philippines car market. The Toyota Innova is positioned above the current crop of compact MPVs as a more premium and bigger vehicle, which offers much more room and premium appeal on the inside, a rugged and reliable mechanical setup, and an extremely tractable engine that can live on for years. It is this super reliable image of the Toyota Innova that it has been raking in consistent volumes by Toyota Philippines all over the world.
Toyota Innova History
In the Philippines car market, the Toyota Innova was launched as a replacement model to the aging Toyota Revo. The much more premium appeal of the Toyota Innova over its predecessor instantly made a huge fan following for it, for it was a coming of age addition in the MPV segment at that time. This first-generation Toyota Innova was launched back in 2005 with a diesel engine as standard, with the options of petrol engine and automatic transmission introduced in later stages.
This first-generation Toyota Innova continued to run for the next ten years till 2016, and during this run, it did receive mild facelifts in 2008, 2012, and 2014. These facelifts did bring in new grilles, new headlamps and tail lamps, new bumpers, new upholstery colors, and new features in every version of it.
Then came the year 2016, when the Toyota Innova finally received its first proper generation change. With an all-new design that looked bigger and much rich in visual appeal in and out, the Toyota Innova moved one segment above and repositioned itself as a completely new generation vehicle. In came an enhanced list of comfort and convenience features and powertrain options, but the overall sense of practicality and reliability continued to persist in the new Innova. This second-generation Toyota Innova received its first facelift in 2021, with an all-new front fascia and additional features upping its overall package.
Toyota Innova Highlight
The recent 2021 facelift of the Toyota Innova has made the front profile of the MPV look more aggressive than ever before, thanks to a bolder looking front grille and new fog lamp inserts. The rest of the exterior design of the Toyota Innova continues to be as before – it looks big, with sleek character lines making it look longer.
The Toyota Innova is now available only with a single 2.8-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, which is available with two transmission options – a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic gearbox. The performance numbers differ on the basis of the transmission option employed – with the manual gearbox, the engine makes 174 PS of power and 360 Nm of torque, while with the automatic one, it makes 170 PS of power and 343 Nm of torque. There are a total of six different variants for the Toyota Innova, namely J MT, E MT, E AT, G MT, G AT, and V AT.
Toyota Innova Safety
While the Toyota Innova misses out on the more sophisticated driver assistance systems from the Fortuner SUV, it is still decently kitted out with standard safety features like dual front and driver knee airbags, ABS with EBD, vehicle stability control and hill start assist. The higher variants do get reverse parking sensors with camera and side and curtain airbags.
Toyota Innova Fuel Consumption
The 2.8-litre diesel engine of the Toyota Innova is a highly tractable and reliable engine to start with, however, it is not too good of an engine when it comes to fuel efficiency. It can return a fuel economy of:
New Toyota Innova Fuel Consumptions
- Toyota Innova 2021: 13.5 KM/L
Used Toyota Innova Fuel Consumptions
- Toyota Innova 2020: 13.5 KM/L
- Toyota Innova 2015: 12.8 KM/L
Toyota Innova Pros and Cons
Toyota Innova Pros
- Premium design – With its big and premium appeal in and out, the Toyota Innova is quite a sophisticated vehicle for the standards of an MPV.
- Great sense of space and seating comfort – The Toyota Innova is available in both 6 and 7 seating configurations, and in both of them, it offers ample amount of room even for taller passengers in all three rows.
- Torquey and reliable engine – The Toyota Innova is known for its amazing reliability and mile-munching abilities, for its engine scores high on torque and much lower wear and tear.
Toyota Innova Cons
- Fuel efficiency could have been better – The diesel engine is high on power, but sadly, it doesn’t score high in terms of refinement and fuel efficiency.
- Could have done with more features – While it is decently kitted out in terms of features by the MPV standards, the Toyota Innova still misses out on a number of features that are present in some of the smaller vehicles from one segment below.
