Ssangyong Motor Company is a Korean car manufacturer that has been in the market for almost 60 years. It is the fourth largest auto company in South Korea. In 2011, Indian car company Mahindra and Mahindra Limited acquired 70 percent share of Ssangyong.

The word Ssangyong means "double dragon" in Korean. In 1980, the company started on developing its 4x4 SUV line by developing their first two SUV models, the Muso and Korando. The company also has various offerings on other car segments such as vans, pickup trucks, luxury cars and commercial vehicles.

Short History

Ssangyong began as two separate companies: Ha Dong-Hwan Motor Workshop, which started in 1954, and Dongbang Motor Corp founded in 1962. It was not until in 1963 that the two company would merged and take the name of the former.

The newly merged company started by producing army trucks and jeeps for the US Army. It then began producing some special purpose vehicles before changing its name to Dong-A motors in 1977. The Ssangyong Business Group purchased the company and changed its name to Ssangyong Motors.

In 1991, the Korean automaker acquired a partnership with Daimler-Benz to develop an SUV equipped with Mercedes Benz technology. The two created the Ssangyong Musso which was later absorbed by Ssangyong as part of its fleet of vehicles.

Their partnership with the German multinational company has also allowed Ssangyong to produce their own SUVs such as Ssangyong Rexton and Ssangyong Korando and Ssangyong Kyron.

"It works for me" is Ssangyong’s simple-worded slogan which they use on many of their marketing campaigns. Part of Ssangyong’s expansion was their development of eco-friendly diesel technology by complementing it with their efficient common rail engine.
