2020 Mazda Miata MX-5 Gets Enhanced Features, More Standard Tech

Kudos to Mazda for consistently delivering a Miata MX-5 that everybody could love year in year out. This 2020 year model is no different—it’s the same instantly likable look, albeit with a few updates to the standard features to ensure the car’s relevance tech-wise.

It’s obvious that Mazda is committed to keeping the MX-5 as pure as possible, though adding more to the package while ensuring the car remains lightweight can be considered a huge challenge, the Japanese car maker looks up to the task. Beginning with the standard SkyActive-G 2.0-liter engine (181 hp, 205 Nm), Skyactiv-MT six-speed manual transmission or six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, and on to the lightweight body, this latest Miata is designed to deliver an inimitable power-to-weight ratio that Mazda describes as “pure joy on just about any road.”

For 2020, Mazda adds to the onboard i-Activsense safety features, which now includes Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Smart City Brake Support and Lane Departure Warning System as standard across the range, even the entry-level Sport trim. The 2020 model is also imbued with more luxurious-looking badging and fonts, as well as a sleeker key fob design.

A black cloth soft top, 16-inch Metallic Black aluminum alloy wheels, silver dual exhaust outlets, and LED headlights and taillights guarantee that the 2020 Miata is as sporty as ever. Infotainment is centered around a Mazda Connect system with seven-inch full-color, touchscreen display, AM/FM six-speaker audio system including driver’s side headrest speakers, and HD Radio, with Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio connectivity thrown in for good measure.

For the first time, the Club Edition will come with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functions. Manual-transmission Club models will get a limited-slip differential, Bilstein dampers, front shock tower brace, and a sport-tuned suspension. The trim will also receive a nine-speaker Bose audio system and LED daytime running lights.

The top-of-the-line Grand Touring trim also comes with the Club’s added accoutrements, albeit the six-speed manual is still offered to cater to racing purists. New available color options include Polymetal Gray, Red Nappa Leather and Gray cloth soft top.

2020 Mazda MX-5 goes on sale with a starting price of USD 26,580 (approx. PHP 1.36 million) and will arrive at US dealerships in February 2020. Price for the model has increased across the board.

Comparatively, the current Mazda MX-5 available locally comes in six different trims, with the price ranging from PHP 1.98 million (MX-5 Soft Top) to PHP 2.69 million (Club Edition).
