Following the unveiling of the new BMW Motorrad R 12 nineT, the famed motorcycle brand has presented the fifth member of the R 18 family, the Roctane.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • How much power does the BMW R 18 Roctane make?

The BMW R 18 Roctane makes 91 horsepower and 150 Newton meters of torque.
  • What are the three riding modes available in the BMW R 18 Roctane?

The three riding modes in the BMW R 18 Roctane are Rain, Roll, and Rock.
  • According to the motorcycle division of BMW, the R 18 Roctane puts the focus back on the essentials of motorcycling.

“Purist, no-frills technology, and the boxer engine as the epicenter of riding pleasure. Classic design and clear, yet contemporary technology merge to form a fascinating overall concept. This combination delivers a unique emotional riding experience and the model is characterized by skillfully staged design language with a rear section in so-called ‘streamlining design,’” BMW Motorrad wrote in a press release.

Powering the BMW R 18 Roctane is a two-cylinder flat twin engine dubbed the “big boxer.” The 1,802 cubic centimeter powerplant puts out as much as 91 horses with 150 Newton-meters of torque.

Design-wise, the mill is painted in Avus Black Metallic Matt with Black High-Gloss glass covers to encapsulate the menacing power it delivers. Further, this finish — BMW Motorrad pointed out — harks back to the traditional air-cooled boxer engines produced by the marque in 1923.

Notable exterior features include an exhaust system and star counter nuts in Dark Chrome.

Complementing the dark-colored appointments is a black paintwork that comes as standard. However, motorcycle buyers can still opt to have the bodywork finished in Mineral Gray Metallic Matt or in Manhattan Metallic Matt.

The BMW R 18 Roctane is built on an elaborately manufactured double-loop tubular steel frame. At the front, it features telescopic forks with sleeves, a cantilever suspension strut, and travel-dependent damping. Meanwhile, the rear end of the R 18 Roctane gets a swinging arm with an enclosed axle drive in a rigid-frame design.

It rides on 21-inch wheels at the front and 18-inch wheels at the rear. Both of which are made from cast alloy material.

Providing riders with visibility are state-of-the-art LED headlamps. It can be optioned with adaptive headlight technology for even better illumination when cornering.

The headlight housing features an integrated classic round instrument panel. It is accompanied by high handlebars that ensure well-balanced ergonomics, relaxed riding, and optimum control.

Its robust list of advanced technological features includes three riding modes (Rain, Roll, and Rock), automatic stability control, a reversing aid, heated grips, and an anti-theft alarm.

Like almost all BMW Motorrad R 18 motorbikes, the Roctane is compatible with the brand's extensive range of optional equipment and Original BMW Motorrad Accessories as well as a laid-back Ride and Style Collection.
