Chery forges partnership with IUCN, UNICEF

Chery Automobile Co., Ltd. has forged a partnership with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) for global initiatives centered on ecological conservation.

Per Chery, it will collaboratively create new ecological conservation and restoration models for forests, wetlands, and oceans in the future with IUCN. The said strategies — the Chinese carmaker added — aim to contribute to Chery’s efforts towards achieving carbon neutrality, nature positivity, and promoting global sustainable development.

Chery explained that its collaboration with IUCN will be divided into two stages.

For the first stage, Chery noted that it will focus on ecological practices with the main objective of “enhancing awareness and capabilities” in China. Until 2024, the Wuhu-based brand will gather its “Global Nature Ambassadors” to engage in knowledge exchange and learning at China’s premier Nature-based Solutions (NbS) implementation sites.

According to the auto firm, the said move will involve capacity building and strategic planning for NbS, as well as leveraging IUCN as a platform for capacity building to establish a foundation for global projects.

“China is one of the countries making the greatest contributions to conservation globally. Its commitment to nature conservation is resolute, and in this regard, China is winning the ‘World Cup,’” IUCN Protected and Conserved Areas Team Head James Hardcastle said.

The second stage will happen from 2025 to 2028 and will see Chery vigorously launch global projects in conjunction with IUCN-covered regions.

Chery revealed that the said initiatives involved in the second phase of its IUCN collaboration will promote the implementation of the planned “Cherish the Nature” NbS global initiative in countries and regions where Chery subsidiaries are established.

To date, Chery has a variety of new-energy vehicles sold around the world. Locally, its eco-friendly lineup includes nameplates like the Tiggo 5X Pro Hybrid, Tiggo 7 Pro Hybrid, and Tiggo 8 Pro Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle.

Not only is Chery creating new connections with organizations like the IUCN, but the company is also fostering partnerships with charitable institutions like the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF).

The carmaker announced a new two-year partnership with UNICEF worth US$6 million in support of children’s education programs in countries namely China, Mexico, South Africa, and Turkey.

In addition to supporting UNICEF projects, Chery also actively pays attention to other aspects of the growth of children and adolescents.

“We very much appreciate Chery’s support for UNICEF’s education programs. This will help us provide quality education for some of the most vulnerable and marginalized children in China and around the world. It will also support countries to strengthen their education systems, to better serve children and communities,” commented UNICEF Representative to China Amakobe Sande.
