Ferrari’s One-Off program has created the Ferrari SP38, a bespoke model that's based on the Ferrari 488 GTB and ordered by an unnamed customer.
Designed by the Ferrari Design Center on the chassis and running gear of the 488 GTB, the Ferrari SP38 "reflects the specific vision of a client with a deep passion for racing" and is a model that can be driven both on the road and on the track "while at the same time expressing all the beauty and innovation inherent in Ferrari’s road cars."
The Ferrari SP38 is an amalgam of previous Ferrari models, specifically the Ferrari F40 and the Ferrari 308 GTB.
With the twin-turbo, twin-intercooler setup of the 488 GTB, the Ferrari Design Center used the F40 as a reference to start working on the car. The shutlines of the carbon-fiber engine cover, for example, slash the flanks that's supposedly reminiscent of the one in the F40 while the transversal slats slash across the engine cover and the integration of the rear spoiler hints at the rear wing of the last Ferrari supercar to be personally signed off by Enzo Ferrari.
As for the elements inspired by the 308 GTB, it's supposedly the slim bumper lip reminiscent with the mandatory daytime running light units relocated here "to add character and functionality."
Compared to the 488 chassis, the visual mass of SP38 appears concentrated over the rear wheels as the wedge design sharply stretches towards the front. Conspicuously absent from the one-off sports car are the air scoops of its donor 488 GTB as the Ferrari Design Center concealed it where the sheet metal folds in on itself from the low beltline on the door and into the rear wheel arch and three-quarter light.
The Ferrari SP38 will make its public debut on May 26, 2018 at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este.
