Nissan develops LIDAR-based ADAS tech with intersection collision avoidance

Nissan is developing an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) based on Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) technology, which features intersection collision avoidance.

According to Nissan, the new LIDAR-based ADAS technology features a new control logic for intersection collision avoidance based on ground-truth perception technology. On that note, the system can detect an object’s speed, location, and potential risk of a collision from a lateral direction.

Further, the system can instantly respond to changing situations through steps like emergency brake application or releasing the said brakes when the potential risk has been avoided.

The Japanese carmaker has staged a demonstration showcasing this new technology at a Nissan facility where a vehicle equipped with the said system performed certain automatic collision-avoidance maneuvers in complex environments and intersections.

“Development of this technology is being carried out under Nissan Ambition 2030, the company’s long-term vision. We are on course to develop collision-avoidance technology utilizing next-generation LIDAR technology by the mid-2020s. Aiming to develop future autonomous driving technologies that customers can use with peace of mind, Nissan is working to fully understand the entire range of accident scenarios by analyzing complex accidents that occur in the real world. Our efforts are aimed to substantially improve accident avoidance,” commented Nissan Research and Advanced Engineering Division Senior Vice President Takao Asami.

The said LIDAR-based ADAS technology is still under development and is also being designed to provide improved assistance in difficult situations through advanced sensing and decision-making capabilities.
