Porsche Debuts All-New Porsche Cayenne

The all-new Porsche Cayenne SUV was finally unveiled last Thursday, August 31. Although the changes are not obvious at first glance, it comes with new features inside and out that significantly improve its on-road performance and comfort.

Design

Although it bears a strong resemblance to its predecessor, the new Cayenne comes with new design elements, such as new horizontal light edges and enlarged air intakes in the front fascia. The rear fascia, on the other hand, boasts a new three-dimensional LED light design with the Porsche logo. Speaking of LEDs, they're widely used over the new Cayenne, such that there are two available upgrades over the standard headlights: the Porsche Dynamic Light System (PLDS) and LED Matrix Beam headlights. Inside, the new Cayenne still comes with a 12.3-inch full-HD touchscreen with the latest version of the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) infotainment system. Unique to the new Cayenne is a feature called the Off-road Precision App, which records rough terrain drives to be used later by drivers for his/her own improvement in skills.

Structure

The exterior of the 2019 Cayenne is made with materials that improve its performance. Its chassis is now 143 lbs. lighter than its predecessor thanks to the combination of alloy, steel, and aluminum materials, while the new lithium-ion polymer starter battery manages to shave 22 lbs. off the weight as well. More than that, the new Cayenne is said to be equipped with a world-first technology which is optional in the vehicle. Called the Porsche Surface Coated Brake (PSCB), it increases friction values while reducing wear and brake dust through the use of cast-iron disc and tungsten-carbide coating.

Performance

According to Porsche, they will include two models in the lineup, which are the Cayenne and Cayenne S. The Cayenne is equipped with a 3.0-liter single-turbo V6 engine that can produce 340 horsepower and 450 Nm of torque, providing the capability of accelerating from zero to nearly 100 kph (97 kph, to be exact) in 5.9 seconds. With the optional Sport Chrono package which bears resemblance to the 918 Spyder design, the Cayenne can reach those numbers in 5.6 seconds. Meanwhile, the Cayenne S is powered by a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 engine which can churn 440 hp and 550 Nm of torque. According to the automaker, it can accelerate to 97 kph in 4.9 seconds from a standstill, but equipping the optional Sport Chrono package can shave 0.3 seconds. Not only are the Cayenne and Cayenne S powered by turbocharged six-cylinder engines, but these are also equipped with a newly-developed eight-speed Tiptronic S gearbox which, according to Porsche, gives improved comfort and quicker response times in its lower gear range. The fully variable Porsche Traction Management (PTM) which improves traction is also standard across the line. In Porsche’s words, the new Cayenne is “more athletic both in appearance and driving performance.”
