Shell shares safety standards, programs with Coca-Cola Beverages PH
Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporations shared its best practices and road safety program with Coca-Cola Beverages Philippines, Inc. (CCBPI) at the latter's virtual Logistics Summit. Shell seeks to promote quality safety standards in the organization and its partners.
Pilipinas Shell is CCBPI’s partner under the Shell Fleet Solutions that helps businesses achieve efficient and more convenient fleet management. Among the services that Shell Fleet Solution provide are fuel discounts, ferry bookings, and streamlining of toll payments.
Shell Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) Manager Lily Keh-Camero claimed that its safety culture ensures a secure manner of delivering products. “We’re not only providing the best-quality fuel products and services, but we also share how we deliver these products in a safe and secure way,” Camero said.
For her part, CCBPI Logistics Director Ruth Genota said that road safety protocols count as an important part of their business. “We have always placed great value on our partnership with Shell, because CCBPI’s road safety protocols are integral to how we do business,” she noted.
“Every Coca-Cola bottle that reaches our consumers is backed by the implicit promise that it was manufactured, handled, and delivered according to the strictest safety standards.”
With a fleet of around 3,000 trucks and more than 2,000 sales service vehicles, Coca-Cola is considered to have one of the largest logistics networks in the Philippines.
According to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), around 32,000 vehicular road accidents happened in the National Capital Region from January to August 2020. An earlier report claimed that truck accidents accounted for almost 15 percent of all road accidents in 2019.
During the Logistics Summit held last February 11, which was attended by 100 CCBPI employees, Pilipinas Shell Country Security Manager Oliver Ortega focused on Shell’s HSSE culture and how Shell reached its current level of safety.
One pillar of the safety program is the HSSE Goal Zero journey. This is targeted to raise safety standards concentrating on three high-risk areas such as personal, process, and transport safety.
For its road safety initiatives, Pilipinas Shell launched in 2019 its road safety program “BiyaHero (a fun play on the phrase “Be A Hero).” The project bolsters road safety best practices by advocating initiatives and partnerships. Stemming from the insight that safety is a shared responsibility, the program noted that drivers, riders, mechanics and pedestrians are all part of ensuring that the road is safer to travel on.
“Road safety protocols demand a continuous journey of improvement. At Coca-Cola—given our goal to deliver quality products across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao—we have to make sure that the Logistics Team are champions of road safety. Through summits like this, we get to learn from industry partners and share best practices, working together to better navigate the country’s roads and chart safer journeys even in service,” Genota said.
The Shell HSSE Manager explained that they focus on road transport risk being one of the organization’s operational risks “as they built COVID-19 safety protocols to bounce back."
She concluded, “We feel good in sharing our safety programs and initiatives, as these have not only improved our safety culture as Shell but they also form a mindset that saves lives. If this can be replicated through platforms like CCBPI’s Logistics Summit, just imagine how many more corporate safety culture and policies can be improved, and ultimately how many more lives we save.”
