Upcoming Volvo EX30 to offer integrated instrument cluster, infotainment system

The upcoming Volvo EX30 will be equipped with a center screen that integrates the electric sport utility vehicle’s (SUV) instrument cluster and infotainment system.

White it may appear that Volvo Cars might be going in the opposite direction, as many of today’s carmakers strive to provide their customers with larger-than-life screens (some even encompass the entirety of the dashboard), the Swedish brand explained that this move falls in line with the theme of “centralization” in the EX30.

Sitting on the dashboard is a single 12.3-inch center screen, which will provide the driver with relevant information as well as keep passengers engaged and occupied on both short and long trips.

The center screen, Volvo Cars pointed out, also offers a “calm” view that strips away everything apart from the most vital information for extra focus. This feature is especially helpful at night when it can reduce the strain on the driver’s eyes during long drives.

“Inside the EX30 we continue our strategy of contextual and focused interfaces. On the single screen, key driving information such as speed and charge levels are positioned prominently at the top, with navigation, media, and controls easily visible and accessible below. We also include a contextual bar that gives you the most relevant functions for your needs at any time,” commented Volvo User Experience Head Tom Stovicek.

Despite having only one screen, the Volvo EX30 will offer state-of-the-art features like built-in Google — which includes hands-free help from Google Assistant, Google Maps navigation — and Wireless Apple CarPlay. Further, it is powered by Snapdragon Cockpit Platforms from Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., providing would-be owners with an ultra-responsive center screen.

Audio is sent to the intuitive audio system, which brings several speakers together into one soundbar and fills the entire cabin with premium sound.

The soundbar, Volvo Cars stated, is a great instance of smart design as it clusters speakers together within one component and reduces the amount of wiring and material. This means that there will be no more speakers on the door, which allowed the designers of the Volvo EX30 to give its soon-to-be owners additional space in the door area.

And while we’re on the topic of space-saving design, the Volvo EX90 sports a versatile center console that has a sliding system that will allow owners to choose exactly how they want to use the space.

For example, Volvo Cars said that the top of the cup holder can slide out to hold either one’s to-go latte or smartphone. Additionally, the lower tunnel has a protective storage area for small items such as one’s sunglasses or ear pods. Further, one can place a bag in the large open space above.

“The Volvo EX30 combines all the best elements of Scandinavian design. New materials add creative textures, color, and personality to the cabin, while smart functionality and a great user experience are the hallmarks of every true Volvo creation. Together, these elements distill the essence of a Volvo into a small package,” Volvo Interior Design Head Lisa Reeves was quoted saying.

The new Volvo EX30 SUV will be revealed on June 7 and will be available to reserve in the United States on the same date.
