Vespa Elettrica Set To Enter Production Next Month
The future of mobility is leaning towards electrification as automotive and motorcycle manufacturers are pitting their respective strategies to make a smooth electric shift. In regards to this, Piaggio Group announced that the Vespa Elettrica is set to enter production in September 2018.
The Elettrica is the first Vespa scooter and it was first previewed as a concept bike during the 2016 Milan Motorcycle Show. The company said that the Elettrica will be produced at the Pontedera plant, which is the same facility where Vespa first rolled off the line way back in 1946.
Sales of this electric scooter will start at the end of October 2018 in Europe. It will then be extended to the United States and Asia beginning early 2019. The company added that the Elettrica will be integrated in the future with artificial intelligence (AI) system, which is both adaptive and responsive to human input. This AI system, according to Vespa, will have the ability to recognize the bike's owner, anticipate the rider's decisions, detect potential accidents, and provide real-time mapping and traffic data. Vespa claims that Elettrica's power unit delivers similar performance to a 50cc single-cylinder engine. It has a max power output of 4 kW (5 hp) and 280 Nm of torque. It is equipped with a lithium battery that has a range of 100 km and can be recharged in four hours.
