KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What types of Yamaha motorcycles now use green aluminum?

According to Yamaha, its large-displacement and off-road competition motorcycles now use green aluminum.
  • Since when did Yamaha start implementing the use of green aluminum for its bikes?

Per Yamaha, it began using green aluminum since February this year.
  • According to Yamaha, it has used green aluminum for its Japanese large-displacement and off-road competition motorcycles since last month. The company added that it plans to expand the number of models using the material in the future as available supply volumes allow.

Green aluminum, Yamaha explained, is aluminum that is refined using renewable energy sources to emit less carbon dioxide (CO2) in its manufacture. Aluminum parts account for 12 percent to 31 percent of the total vehicle weight of a motorcycle, so adopting green aluminum is one effective approach for reducing CO2 emissions from the raw material manufacturing part of a product's life cycle.

The introduction of green aluminum is meant to complement Yamaha’s efforts in reducing its CO2 footprint.

To note, Yamaha has actively pushed the use of recycled aluminum, which now comprises some 80 percent of the brand’s aluminum usage.

“In line with the Yamaha Motor Group Environmental Plan 2050, the company is aiming to achieve carbon neutrality throughout all of its business activities — including its entire supply chain — by 2050. To realize this, the company has set a goal of switching to 100 percent sustainable materials by 2050, such as adopting more plant-derived resin materials, developing recyclable polypropylene, and adopting green materials and other recycled materials for its motorcycles manufactured in Japan and overseas,” Yamaha said in a press release.
