Younger Siblings Are Safer Drivers, Study Says
Looking for something to rub in the face of your elder sibling? Here’s one: a newly released study claims that compared to their younger brothers and sisters, eldest children are more likely to violate traffic rules and have road traffic accidents. In contrast, younger siblings tend to do a better job at driving.

The Privilege Car Insurance study

A study by UK’s Privilege Car Insurance looked into the habits of 1,395 drivers. The study discovered that 89 percent of first-born children are likely to speed, 47 percent likely to cut off other drivers and annoy, 46 percent are likely to drive slowly in the middle of the road, and 35 percent are likely to get fined. Additionally, 30 percent are more likely to use their phone even if they know it’s illegal to do so. If the older sibling is female, they’re 17 percent more likely to apply make-up while behind the wheel. All these numbers point to the fact that  older brothers and sisters have a higher chance of figuring in a car accident. The study also mentions that in the last five years, 22 percent of first-borns have had a minor accident, while 15 percent found themselves in more serious ones.

Only children

If you’re an only child, the study accounts for you, too. Although only children are often stereotyped as selfish and inconsiderate, they are actually the most admirable of road users. According to the study, only children are the least likely to hog the middle or outside lane, or cut someone else off on the road. “Sibling rivalry is a famous family issue, in particular when arguing over who is the better driver,” said Charlotte Fielding, head of Privilege DriveXpert. “Younger drivers with DriveXpert telematics policies are given a score based on their safe driving ability.” “This technology can not only encourage safe driving and reward those who do so with lower insurance premiums, but can also help siblings decide once and for all who is best behind the wheel,” Fielding added. So there you have it. If your first-born keeps bragging that they are the smarter or most behaved one in the family, at least you can point out that they are also more responsible for aggravating their fellow road users.
