Cruiser motorcycles in the Philippines
Cruiser motorcycles are motorized bikes which retain the American design and style from the 1930s to the 1960s. The riding position usually has its driver’s spine leaning back a little, his feet placed forward and his hands placed high on the handlebars.
Customized bikes and choppers
This design is commonly found on American choppers and they are used for touring or travelling long distances. Choppers, in particular, are motorbikes built from parts coming from different motorcycles. These units are usually built not for the sake of performance, but for visual effect.
Several shops, however, offer minor modifications such as body paint and accessory installments to meet the different needs of its customers. Cruiser motorcycles equipped with luggage carriers for touring are called baggers.
Harley-Davidson: Pioneer of cruisers
Motorcycles made by the American company Harley-Davidson are the most popular line of cruiser bikes. This brand of motorcycle is beloved by motoring enthusiasts because of their “muscled design” and greater engine displacement of 700cc and greater. Other long time brands in this motor class are the Henderson, Indian and Excelsior.
Leading motorcycle brands such as Honda, BMW, Suzuki, Yamaha, Victory, Moto Guzzi and Triumph have also released their own cruising nameplates
Old models, power cruisers
Japanese-made cruisers, especially those made in the 1980s, were modified to have a neutral riding position as seen on regular motorcycles such as scooters and cubs. Old model cruisers have a low-slung design resulting in poor turning ability and limited ride performance.
Because of these limitations several customizations were needed to improve their steering, lean angle and engine power. Some motorcycle manufacturers have also produced a line of products called “power cruisers” which offer enhanced driving and engine performance without compromising the cruiser bike’s basic body design.
Power cruisers have a higher engine output, averaging 80 to 100 horsepower, compared to the 50 to 70 horsepower with other motorcycle models in this segment. They also have higher ground clearance, better suspensions and brakes, and non-traditional styling.
