Geely EX5 EM-i

Inside, the Geely EX5 EM-i features a luxurious, smart cabin packed with advanced tech features and premium creature comforts. Upon entering, the driver is greeted by a high-tech cockpit, which comes with a 10.2-inch LCD instrument cluster, a microfiber leather-wrapped steering wheel with multiple controls, and a modern-looking center console. Owners of the Max trim also get a heads-up display placed on the car’s windshield.

Meanwhile, all passengers can enjoy a 15.4-inch FLYME AUTO HD touchscreen infotainment display that is equipped with a high-performance chipset, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth connectivity, a dual-zone front audio control, and an FM radio. The Max trim features a 16-speaker FLYME SOUND audio system with two headrest speakers, while the Pro trim gets the standard 6-speaker version. The Max trim also features Geely’s 256-coloured dynamic ambient lighting system.

Practicality-wise, its cabin is very roomy, effectively accommodating five passengers. Its perforated PVC seats hug your body so well, even on long-distance drives. At the back, this plug-in hybrid SUV offers a generous 528-L minimum trunk capacity, which can extend up to a whopping 2,065 liters of space. For added convenience, it also comes with four USB ports (two Type-A and two Type-C), a front 12V power socket, V2L and V2V power supplies, and a wireless charger for the Max trim.

The Geely EX5 EM-i sports a futuristic exterior design that looks elegant and dynamic at the same time. Its smooth fascia is enhanced by a sleek chrome strip that connects the two hypermodern-looking LED DRLs, which emit a unique flare at night. It features angular LED automatic headlights that mesh well with the pointed contours of its front bumper. And, underneath, a functional grille adds a robust touch to its overall demeanor on the road.

Aside from that, its side profile is defined by a mix of muscular curves, sleek character lines, and classy-looking 19-inch low drag alloy wheels for the Max trim (Pro trim comes with the standard 18-inch alloy wheels). The higher-spec Max features power-adjustable side mirrors, while the base Pro gets the manual-folding counterparts. For enhanced visibility, especially at night, this SUV also comes with LED cornering lights. 

Its elegant, hypermodern personality carries over to the rear. A hypermodern LED light bar runs across the entire width of the car. This SUV also gets a pair of LED fog lights and a high-mounted stop light for added safety. Both trims come with a roof rack for additional storage. However, only the Max trim gets a power tailgate for a more premium feel overall.

Both trims of the Geely EX5 EM-i measure 4,740 mm in length, 1,905 mm in width, and 1,685 mm in height. This plug-in hybrid SUV also has a wheelbase of 2,755 mm and a minimum unladen ground clearance of 172 mm.

In terms of suspension, the Geely EX5 EM-i is equipped with MacPherson Struts at the front and a Multi-Link at the rear. Its suspension setup is tuned to deliver a comfortable riding experience even on bumpy, uneven city roads. It feels light and very agile, allowing you to cruise past tight traffic without much hassle. However, body rolls are quite noticeable when hitting turns or corners at higher speeds. But, to be fair, this car was designed to be driven sensibly in the city. 

The EX5 EM-i model line is powered by Geely’s EM-i Super Hybrid System that combines a 1.5L, 4-cylinder, naturally-aspirated engine with a single permanent magnet synchronous motor. Its engine delivers 73 kW (98 hp) of maximum power and 125 Nm of maximum torque, while its motor generates 160 kW (215 hp) and 262 Nm. An 18.4-kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate battery powers its motor, offering an NEDC pure electric range of 105 km. Combined, its Super Hybrid System delivers an NEDC range of up to 1,000 km.

This SUV comes mated to a single-speed dedicated hybrid transmission system and utilizes a front-wheel drivetrain. It also comes with three driving modes: Pure, Hybrid, and Power. While it may not be the most powerful in its segment, it still delivers a peppy and very smooth performance at high speeds on the highway. In the city, it remains refined in stop-and-go traffic, thanks to its premium sound insulation system. And, on top of this, it boasts outstanding efficiency even when you are driving in mixed conditions. 

Safety is one of the main strengths of the Geely EX5 EM-i as it is equipped with a wide array of advanced driver assistance systems, as well as passive security features. Its comprehensive ADAS suite includes adaptive and intelligent cruise control, automatic emergency braking, emergency lane keeping assistant, front collision mitigation support, traffic signs identification, auto vehicle hold, and an electronic parking brake. 

The Max trim also gets an intelligent high beam control, rear collision mitigation support, rear cross traffic alert and brake, door open warning, lane changing assistant, and blind spot detection. This trim also features a 360-degree panoramic camera with transparent chassis.

In terms of braking, this SUV utilizes ventilated discs at the front and solid discs at the rear. Its brakes are supported by Geely’s Traction Control System (G-TCS), an anti-lock braking system with electronic brakeforce distribution, a brake assist system, a collision safety power cut-off system, and a multi-collision braking system, among others.

The Geely EX5 EM-i is a well-rounded plug-in hybrid electric vehicle that effectively caters to modern driving needs. It delivers a luxurious and very refined full-EV-like cruising experience while offering everyday city practicality and outstanding cost-effectiveness.
