Yamaha YZF-R3 Review
Yamaha YZF-R3 Overview
The Yamaha YZF-R3 ranks above the YZF-R15 as the second smallest motorcycle in the Yamaha’s glorious lineup of super-sports. Currently, in its second generation version, the Yamaha YZF-R3 is also the smallest twin-cylinder motorcycle from Yamaha in the Philippines market. The Yamaha YZF-R3 is currently priced at PHP 259,000, and is being offered in three different colour options – Racing Blue, Black Raven, and Matte Red.
Yamaha YZF-R3 Design
The Yamaha YZF-R3, in its second generation version, has got a completely new front end, which looks very much inspired from the all-new generation super-sport models with which it shares the lineup, like R15, R6, and R1.
Rest assured, except for the front end, the rear end of the motorcycle as well as many bits have been lifted off from the previous generation model. This is not a bad thing, considering the fact that how good the previous model was in terms of looks.
The revised front end of the Yamaha YZF-R3 looks very much similar to that of the new Yamaha YZF-R15, with a curvaceous looking fairing which houses twin LED headlamps and an arrow head shaped air duct placed in the middle of the headlamps. However, all of them are quite bigger in size, compared to that on the R15, which surely manages to give a big bike appeal to it. The rounded-from-above transparent visor as well as fairing mounted rearview mirrors have been lifted off from the R15.
The side fairing of the Yamaha YZF-R3 too has been revised, which looks bigger than before, and masks the black finished powertrain very well. The zig-zag shaped side body panels are given faux carbon fibre finish which adds to the sporty aura of the motorcycle. The fuel tank has been lifted off from the previous model, which is large and curvy, and slopes down towards the front. The multi-spoke alloy wheels and small exhaust pipe complete its big bike look even more.
The tail section of the Yamaha YZF-R3 has been completely retained from the previous generation model, which accommodates the segregated split pillion seat theme and an uprising tailpiece, which ends up with a triangular LED tail lamp nestled at its back. The small rear fender enhances its look from the back.
The new Yamaha YZF-R3 gets a completely new fully digital instrument console, which is a huge departure from the part digital console from the previous model. The revised console shows a digital speedometer, tachometer, odometer, trip meters, fuel gauge, temperature gauge, distance to empty, average fuel efficiency, and gear indicator. The motorcycle continues to get clip-on handlebars, which are positioned slightly lower than before, but still are comfortable to use.
Yamaha YZF-R3 Ride & Handling
The YZF series of motorcycles are known for their great handling prowess, and the Yamaha YZF-R3 follows no different path from its peers in this matter. The motorcycle sits on a diamond type frame, and gets upside down hydraulic telescopic forks at the front and a linked mono-shock with rectangular swing-arm at the back.
The suspension isn’t too stiff like that on the smaller R15, however, it still feels agile on the go and gives the motorcycle amazing handling characteristics. There are single disc brakes employed on both the ends of the motorcycle.
Yamaha YZF-R3 Engine & Fuel Consumption
Powering the Yamaha YZF-R3 is a four-stroke, inline twin, liquid-cooled, fuel-injected, 321cc engine, which currently is the smallest twin-cylinder engine in the motorcycle lineup from Yamaha in the Philippines. Paired to a 6-speed gearbox, the engine is good enough to produce 42 PS of maximum power output and 29.6 Nm of maximum torque output. The engine loves to be revved and the refinement levels and power delivery are very smooth and exciting as well.
Yamaha YZF-R3 Braking & Safety
The Yamaha YZF-R3 is equipped with dual-channel ABS and slipper clutch, which for now are the only two safety features available in the motorcycle.
Yamaha YZF-R3 Verdict
The Yamaha YZF-R3 strikes a perfect chord between an out-and-out super-sport and a sport-tourer, with its slightly comfortable riding posture and great handling ability, both on fast stretches as well as corners. The engine is the most lovely aspect of the motorcycle, outshining all of its peers when it comes to both refinement and performance.
