Hyundai is Developing Wearable Industrial Robots
Hyundai Motor Group wants to develop wearable industrial robots to increase the efficiency of its production and to prevent work-related accidents.
The Korean automaker's robotics team will focus its research and development in three areas of robotic: wearable robots, service robots, and mirco-mobility.
As such, Hyundai said in a statement that it has already started the development of the Hyundai Vest Exoskeleton (H-VEX) wearable robots. H-VEX is a device that alleviates pressure in the worker's neck and back by giving an additional 60 kg of strength to the user. The Korean automaker believes that this will be an effective tool in preventing injury and increasing work efficiency.
Aside from the H-VEX, the automaker has revealed its Hyundai Chairless Exoskeleton (H-CEX) last August 2018 at the Hyundai-Kia North America factory. The H-CEX, as seen in the photos here, is developed for industrial use. It is a knee-joint protective device that is said to help maintain the worker's sitting position. Hyundai says the H-CEX is light and durable and can withstand weights of up to 150 kg.
Hyundai is determined to come up with new developments as it established a designated robotics team to introduce such technology. The automaker is also in the process of strategic partnership with other companies that are experts in the field of robotics and artificial intelligence.
"The robotics field not only offers future mobility solutions, but also presents alternative solutions to reduce productivity decline in the workforce," said Executive Vice President of Strategy & Technology Division and Chief Innovation Officer of Hyundai Motor Group, Dr. Youngcho Chi.
Hyundai plans to test and apply the H-CEX and the H-VEX in the North American factories at the end of 2018.
The H-VEX is not a new technology as Ford is also using a similar machine. Dubbed as EksoVest, it also provides lift assistance to the user and is said to yield less work fatigue and prevent injury. The EksoVest fits workers that stands 5 feet 2 inches up to 6 feet 4 inches.
