Kubica's Fairy Tale F1 Comeback Will Be a Short-Lived One

Kubica's Fairy Tale F1 Comeback Will Be a Short-Lived One

It was one of the biggest stories of this F1 season--Robert Kubica, who suffered a serious crash in 2011, finally returned to the circuit after his lengthy absence.

As one of the biggest stars before the crash happened, many were rooting for his successful return. Unfortunately, his performance thus far has been subpar, and with the belief that he is holding back the ROKiT Williams Racing Team, the Polish racer has decided to leave the British F1 club at the end of 2019.

The announcement that he was returning this season with Williams sent waves of anticipation across the F1 world, after he spent the previous year working as the team's reserve and development driver.

But after suffering one poor performance after another, and being out-qualified by teammate George Russell in all of the 14 rounds so far this year, Kubica confirmed in the press conference ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix his decision to leave Williams at the end of the season.

"I have taken the decision that I will not continue more with Williams after this year," Kubica said at the press conference. "The decision opens a bit the opportunities for me for the future in different scenarios and now I will evaluate what is possible."

"This season has been very tough from a performance point of view, but it's been also very demanding. Being back in Formula 1 after a long time is not easy, and especially when you're in a difficult situation like we are. But still, nevertheless, I have to thank the team for the opportunity and we'll see what the future will bring," he continued.

On behalf of the ROKiT Williams Racing Team, Deputy Team Principal Claire Williams released a statement following Kubica's announced departure:

"I would like to thank Robert for his hard work and respect his decision to leave the team at the end of the 2019 season. Robert has been an important member of the team in both his role as Reserve & Development Driver, and subsequently as one of our Race Drivers in 2019. We thank him for his continued efforts throughout what has been a challenging couple of seasons and wish him well in his future endeavors."

Prior to the crash, Kubica announced that he was supposed to be picked up by Ferrari for the 2012 season. Indeed, it looked like the Polish racing driver was very much headed to a lucrative career in motorsports until the accident curtailed it all.
