Tokyo 2017: Mitsubishi Premieres Mitsubishi e-Evolution Concept
Mitsubishi has always used the 'Evolution' brand to, well, brand its high-performance vehicles and the concept car it is launching at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show is no different.
The Mitsubishi e-Evolution Concept is a high-performance all-electric sport utility vehicle that "embodies Mitsubishi Motors Corporation’s new brand strategy under the new 'Drive your Ambition' global tagline, a strategy that reflects an adventurous and progressive mindset for inspirational design and product."
The front fascia of the Mitsubishi e-Evolution Concept has a new treatment of the brand's Dynamic Shield design, with the black grille shielded behind a glass as a subtle hint to the vehicle's high-performance electric vehicle platform. Also protected under the glass are cameras and sensors while large air intakes are located beneath the headlamps to divert air to cool the electric brake calipers.
To show off the vehicle's off-road prowess, the Mitsubishi e-Evolution Concept has a high ground clearance, short overhangs, strong shoulders, and narrow hips to project nimbleness and agility. Muscular tires on all four corners establish its four-wheel drive capability while the bars running from front to rear along either side of the roof enhance the vehicle's muscular attitude.
The Mitsubishi e-Evolution Concept is powered by three electric motors, with a single motor driving the front wheels while the two rear motors are complemented by a new Dual Motor Active Yaw Control (AYC) system. All these systems are then integrated into Mitsubishi's unique Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) vehicle dynamic control system. According to Mitsubishi, the effects of the system can be felt and appreciated immediately, even at low speeds when G-forces are low.
The best party trick of the Mitsubishi e-Evolution Concept though is its Artificial Intelligence (AI) system that augments the driver's capabilities. Through an array of sensors, the AI system can instantly read not only changes in road and traffic conditions but the driver's intent as well. The AI system seamlessly coordinates the driver's intent with the vehicle's performance, supporting drivers of all abilities.
"By making it easier and safer to control the vehicle, the motoring experience is brought to a new level," Mitsubishi said at the launch of the Mitsubishi e-Evolution Concept.
