VW announces presales of 2021 Golf Variant

Volkswagen has begun accepting reservations for the 2021 Golf Variant. Yes, the ‘V’ is capitalized, because Variant is actually the name of this particular trim for the Golf. We’d certainly like to know the genius at the Volkswagen Group who thought that was a good idea.

According to VW, the compact estate “is now more digital, more dynamic and more versatile than ever before,” boasting more interior space, perfect for those with plenty of passengers and/or cargo to haul. Tech systems have also been upgraded, and for the first time, the model will include mild hybrid and twin-dosing technology in its drive options.

Variants of the new Golf Variant (see the problem here?) with the mild-hybrid powertrain are highly fuel efficient, thanks to VW’s system which switches off the TSI direct-injection turbo gasoline engine whenever it can, allowing the vehicle to coast with zero local emissions.

The initial mild-hybrid powertrain, a 1.0-liter electrified and turbocharged stratified injection (eTSI) unit, pushes off 108hp. Aside from a gasoline mild-hybrid, the Golf Variant will also be sold with innovative 2.0-liter turbocharged direct injection (TDI) diesel engines, which will be initially launched with two output levels: 113hp and 148hp. Both diesel engines will rely on twin-dosing technology (dual AdBlue injection with two Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) catalytic converters), proven to significantly reduces nitrogen oxide emissions (NOx).

All mild hybrid Golf Variants rely on an automatic 7-speed dual clutch gearbox (DSG), which is the main factor that makes the seamless transition between gas engine and coasting possible, according to the German carmaker.

The new Golf Variant, representing the first of the model’s eighth generation, is 66mm longer than its predecessor, and the added space is not just lip service, as the rear now offers much more legroom.  The Golf Variant also features an impressively large luggage compartment, with a stowage capacity of 611 liters when the rear seats are up. With the rear seats down, stowage capacity increases to 1,642 liters.

Equipment packages will vary between the Variant’s three trims—Life, Style and R-Line. Standard on all trims are the following: Lane Assist, Front Assist with the City Emergency Braking System and Pedestrian Monitoring, XDS electronic differential lock, Car2X traffic hazard alert system, keyless comfort start system Keyless Start and automatic lighting control.

Other standard features include Digital Cockpit Pro digital instruments, 8.25-inch touchscreen, We Connect and We Connect Plus online services and functions, a multifunction steering wheel, Air Care Climatronic automatic air conditioner and a Bluetooth telephone interface.

Volkswagen was supposed to debut the Golf Variant at cancelled the Geneva Motor Show last March, but global situations forced the brand to delay the activity to this month. Volkswagen plans to bring the 2021 Variant—along with the Golf Estate and Alltrack—in Europe late this year, with rollout to other markets beginning early 2021.

Unfortunately, VW PH dropped the Golf from its lineup sometime in 2018. Interested car buyers can choose from the German marque’s local models, which include the Santana, Santana GTS, Lavida, Lamando, and Tiguan.
