Land Rover Defender Review
Land Rover Defender Overview
Among all the iconic off-roader SUVs to have ever made in the history till date, the Land Rover Defender holds a special place. After almost 67 years of continuous production, the Land Rover Defender was discontinued back in 2016, only to reincarnate itself in a modern avatar which it is today. The Philippines car market gets the latest generation Land Rover Defender only in its five-door version in four different variants – Urban, Country, Adventure and Explorer.
Land Rover Defender Interior
The Land Rover Defender looks as scintillating and unique on the inside as it is on the outside It shares nothing with the Defender of the yesteryears, for the cabin looks all new and supremely modern with a number of uniquely laid elements.
Take for instance, the touchscreen infotainment system, which is stacked between two protruding layers running across the width of the dashboard. Even the lower part of the center console looks quite unique with its tapered down design and houses knobs for the multi-zone automatic climate control and short lever for the transmission.
As with all the other Land Rovers, the Defender too gets a bold looking multi-functional steering wheel with a full TFT instrument console behind it. The all-black cabin of the Land Rover Defender is suitable to accommodate five passengers at its best, with a respectable boot space at the back as well.
Land Rover Defender Exterior
The Land Rover Defender has made a great comeback and how, for this iconic SUV looks like a drastic evolution of the previous generation model. Having the same boxy silhouette, the Land Rover Defender now wears a much more modern design, which looks futuristic with many unique design details.
The elevated stance of the Land Rover Defender at the front has a three-segmented rectangular front grille, with the lower two slats encased in a slightly protruding out base. The outer edges of the front profile get rectangular headlamps with slightly rounded edges, in which there are U-shaped daytime running LEDs and LED projectors. The front bumper, with its heavy looking cladding job, as well as front bonnet with a humped design in between makes the Land Rover Defender look very muscular.
The Land Rover Defender retains its boxy silhouette of its previous iteration when viewed from the sides. The almost vertical pillars with their blackened finish, almost squared out window panels, wide rear view mirrors and subtle body cladding running sideways make the Land Rover Defender look quite purposeful and true to its legendary design language of yesteryears.
The Land Rover Defender, even in this latest iteration, retains the theme of spare-wheel mounted on the middle of the tailgate. The segmented theme for the LED tail lamps with four different squared elements takes attention to detail to new heights.
Land Rover Defender Ride & Handling
This is the first-ever Land Rover Defender to sport a monocoque frame, unlike the body-on-frame structure of all the previous generation models of the SUV. With a fully independent electronically controlled suspension all around, multiple drive modes on offer and supremely capable four-wheel-drive system with locking center differential and active rear locking differential, the Land Rover Defender continues to be an all-rounder on whatever the tarmac it is driven over.
Land Rover Defender Engine & Fuel Consumption
Among the variety of engines available for the Land Rover Defender overseas, the model for the Philippines gets a standard 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six petrol engine coupled to an 8-speed automatic transmission as well as 48V mild hybrid system. The engine breathes out maximum power and torque output of 395 PS and 550 Nm respectively.
Land Rover Defender Braking & Safety
The Land Rover Land Rover Defender shares its extensive list of safety features with its other stablemates, including front, side, curtain and knee airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist, autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring system, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, park assist and 360-degree parking aid with sensors and camera all around.
Land Rover Defender Verdict
The Land Rover Defender takes forward all the positive and strong attributes of the iconic old generation Defender, but with a whole lot of modernity on offer. With futuristic-looking styling in and out and capable mechanical underpinnings, the Land Rover Defender scores heavily in both on-road persona as well as performance on and off the road.
