Mazda CX-8

Upon entering the Mazda CX-8, you are greeted by a minimalist cabin that still looks premium by today’s standards—proving how timeless Mazda’s craftsmanship truly is. Both trims come with plush Nappa leather seats and a classy Deep Red interior trim. The AWD Exclusive trim also offers second-row captain seats with a center console, cupholders, and two USB-C ports for a more exclusive and luxurious cruising experience. 

Practicality-wise, its first and second rows are roomy, while the third row is better suited for kids or smaller passengers in general. To compensate for its lack of rear room, this SUV comes with an expansive trunk that offers generous space for your cargo. For added convenience, this SUV is also equipped with a wireless charger, multiple USB-C ports, multiple cupholders, rear door sunshades, and automatic climate control (dual-zone for the front) for its air-conditioning system.

At the center of its dashboard is an 8-inch LCD infotainment display that supports the Mazda Connect app and offers wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth Hands-Free. Its infotainment display is connected to a 10-speaker BOSE Sound System, delivering high-quality bass and acoustics around the cabin.

Meanwhile, drivers are given a 7-inch LCD instrument display, a front windshield-projected active driving display, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with multiple switches, and a conventional-looking shift knob (also wrapped in leather). Lastly, for an overall aesthetic interior feel, this SUV comes with an electric glass sunroof.

Appearance-wise, the Mazda CX-8 exudes a commanding presence wherever it goes. Its timeless design strikes a balance between elegance and confidence. At the front, it sports an imposing grille finished in gun metallic. It features Mazda’s signature angular LED headlights with sleek LED DRLs. Its headlights are equipped with an Adaptive Front-Lighting System (AFS) and a high beam control. And, for enhanced visibility, especially at night, this SUV also gets LED fog lamps.

On the sides, it displays blacked-out features and some chrome accents for a classy touch. It comes with body-coloured power-adjustable and foldable mirrors. Both trims run on 19-inch aluminum alloy wheels in bright silver, which complement its elegant body paint. 

Similar to its front end, its rear design looks very timeless as well, highlighted by its modern-looking LED combination lamps and hands-free power liftgate with height adjustment memory. Additionally, a dual large-type exhaust tail pipe configuration adds a hint of sportiness to this SUV’s overall appearance. And, on top, the AWD Exclusive (6-Seater) trim also comes with roof rails for more storage.

In terms of dimensions, both trims of the Mazda CX-8 measure 4,900 mm in length, 1,840 mm in width, and 1,730 mm in height. This SUV also comes with a 2,930-mm wheelbase. The Signature (7-Seater) trim has a 200-mm minimum ground clearance, while the AWD Exclusive trim offers 185 mm.

In terms of suspension, the Mazda CX-8 is equipped with MacPherson Struts at the front and a Multi-Link at the rear. Its setup offers an impressive balance of comfort and sportiness wherever it goes. Both trims of the Mazda CX-8 are powered by a 2.5L SKYACTIV-G in-line 4-cylinder engine that has a maximum power output of 190 PS and a maximum torque of 252 Nm. This SUV comes mated to Mazda’s SKYACTIV-DRIVE 6-speed automatic transmission system with a Sport Mode. The AWD Exclusive trim features Mazda’s I-ACTIV All-Wheel Drive technology, while the Signature trim utilizes a front-wheel drivetrain.

That said, its engine is reliable on the highway and capable enough to handle steep inclines when traveling light. However, it tends to struggle at higher speeds when fully loaded. On the plus side, its gearbox is smooth and responsive, and it offers respectable fuel economy for its class, thanks to Mazda’s I-STOP feature.

Both trims of the CX-8 come with Mazda’s I-ACTIVSENSE technology, which consists of a driver attention alert, lane departure warning with lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and front and rear smart city brake support. This SUV is also equipped with a 360-degree view camera, front and rear parking sensors, and a total of six airbags, among others.

In terms of braking, the CX-8 comes with front ventilated discs and rear solid discs. Its braking setup is supported by an anti-lock braking system with electronic brakeforce distribution, as well as a dynamic stability control feature.

In my opinion, the Mazda CX-8 is one of the most enjoyable midsize SUVs to drive in the local market. It showcases Mazda’s standard of driving engagement and confident handling while remaining reliable and practical for everyday city use.
