Mazda CX-5 AWD HEV Premium Plus starts at P2.495 million.
  • The Japanese automaker’s local distributor shared that the sport utility vehicle kept its distinct character that has made the CX-5 a key part of Mazda's lineup while introducing changes aimed at improving comfort, practicality, connectivity, and everyday drivability.

“Since Bermaz Auto Philippines took over the exclusive distributorship of Mazda in the Philippines, the CX-5 has been a core part of our line-up. Known for its distinctive design and responsive performance, it is the choice for drivers seeking a refined yet practical compact SUV,” Mazda Philippines President and Chief Executive Officer Steven Tan said.

“Now on its third generation, the all-new Mazda CX-5 combines a more intuitive human-machine interface with the same emotional appeal that defines the brand expressed through Jinba-Ittai driving dynamics and Kodo design, while enhancing everyday comfort through improved packaging and ride quality. It meets the demands of daily commuting while remaining versatile enough for weekend travel or family use,” he added.

    Exterior

While keeping the CX-5's familiar Kodo styling, the new design adopts cleaner surfaces and sharper proportions guided by Mazda's “Wearable Gear” concept, which focuses on creating an appearance that is both approachable and adaptable.

Compared with the outgoing model, the new CX-5 is 115 millimeters (mm) longer, 15 mm wider, and 30 mm taller. Its wheelbase has also been extended by 115 mm, contributing to increased space for rear passengers and best-in-class second-row legroom.

One of the more distinctive visual elements is the trapezoidal treatment around the lower portion of the body, which creates a defined transition between the painted surfaces and lower cladding. Mazda said that the design draws inspiration from kigumi, a traditional Japanese woodworking technique in which structural components are precisely fitted together without nails.

At the front, the raised nose gives the vehicle a more commanding appearance while the revised wing lines makes it more visible from the driver's seat. Wider bumper openings further emphasize the vehicle's width, while the Signature Wing element sits between the sharp double illumination elements to give the fascia a more assertive character.

Gloss-black cladding runs along the lower portions of the body, while 19-inch alloy wheels finished in black metallic complement the SUV's updated appearance.

The rear takes a cleaner approach, with slim linear LED taillights and large “MAZDA” lettering replacing the traditional logo treatment.

    Interior

Inside, Mazda has focused on creating a cleaner and more spacious environment. The cabin took its cues from the Japanese concept of Ma, which emphasizes space, balance, and harmony.

The interior combines Japanese Sen Wood trim with genuine sports tan leather, giving the cabin a more upscale appearance. The front seats are power-adjustable and feature memory presets and ventilation for the driver.

The large 15.6-inch infotainment display is integrated into the new horizontal dashboard, while the redesigned center console houses repositioned cupholders and a wireless charger.

The increase in exterior dimensions also translated into additional passenger space. Rear knee clearance has grown by 64 mm, while headroom is up by 29 mm. The rear door opening is also 70 mm wider, with a broader scuff plate and lower hip point—making it easier for passengers to get in and out.

Additionally, the longer wheelbase contributes to an approximately 45-mm increase in load-floor depth, allowing larger items to be positioned upright.

The cabin also comes with a seven-color ambient lighting system integrated into the front door trims, along with a panoramic sunroof.

Underpinning the CX-5's digital functions is Mazda E/E Architecture+ (EEA+), the automaker's next-generation electrical and electronic architecture. The system is designed to support faster processing, improved connectivity, and future digital functions, while providing the foundation for the vehicle's updated human-machine interface and over-the-air update capability.

The central display is designed with smartphone-like operation and a customizable home screen that puts frequently used functions within easy reach. The system also integrates climate-control functions, voice assistance, and apps for music, video streaming, and news. A 360° View Monitor provides an overview of the vehicle's surroundings to assist with maneuvering.

Audio duties are handled by a 12-speaker Bose premium sound system equipped with Perceptual Sound Rendering (PSR).

The driver faces a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, with a head-up display projecting key information onto the windshield.

    Powertrain and chassis

For the Philippine market, the CX-5 is powered by a 2.5-liter e-Skyactiv-G engine paired with Mazda's hybrid system. The setup produces:

    Maximum output (in horsepower)

    178.5

    Peak torque (in Newton-meters)

    242

This is mated to a recalibrated six-speed automatic transmission with revised shift mapping and updated hydraulic torque-converter control to reduce unnecessary shifting. This also allows the transmission to deliver either smoother or more responsive gear changes depending on the driving conditions and driver's inputs.

Mazda has also revised the CX-5's suspension. Softer springs, retuned dampers, and revised anti-roll bar sizing. The company said that the increased rebound damping at both ends also improved ride comfort and maintained the model's handling characteristics.

    Safety and driver assistance

The CX-5 comes with Mazda's i-Activsense suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), including:

    • Front and Rear Smart Brake Support
    • Enhanced Blind Spot Monitoring
    • Driver Monitoring and Driver Attention Alert
    • Cruising and Traffic Support with Lane Change Assist
    • Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Emergency Lane Keeping

The model has earned a five-star safety rating from the European New Car Assessment Programme and its Australasian counterpart, in addition to a Top Safety Pick+ recognition from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

    Price and availability

The Mazda CX-5 2.5L AWD HEV Premium Plus is priced at P2.495 million and is offered in six exterior colors:

    • Navy Blue Mica, introduced for the first time in Mazda's lineup
    • Soul Red Crystal
    • Rhodium White
    • Machine Gray
    • Jet Black
    • Aero Gray

The purchase package includes a three-year bumper-to-bumper warranty and a complimentary five-year service plan.

Tan said the latest CX-5 builds on the model's established strengths while adding technology, space, and convenience.

“The all-new Mazda CX-5 elevates the everyday experience thanks to its advanced technology, significantly more practical SUV dimensions, and, of course, the signature driving dynamics,” Tan mentioned.

“The CX-5 is an important part of Mazda with cumulative global sales reaching five million units. There is no doubt that the next-generation model will continue to do the same,” he concluded.

Relatedly, Tan noted that a front-wheel drive version will arrive in the country next year.
