Aston Martin Valkyrie Houses Ultimate Hybrid Powertrain

Aston Martin certainly means business with its Valkyrie. A lot is at stake with the car's performance after all, ever since Christian Horner, Red Bull boss and Aston Martin partner, boastfully claimed that their build could beat the overall record set by Porsche at Nurburgring.

And so the British carmaker brought in super-engine-maker Cosworth into the Valkyrie fold to build a naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V12 engine that not only sets new standards for maximum rpm and weight but also ensures that proud boast is realized.

Featuring a certified 1,000 hp peak power at 10,500 rpm, the Cosworth engine can go up to 11,000 rpm max--making the Valkyrie the only naturally aspirated emissions-compliant road car to do so. This peak output--along with the 740 Nm at 7,000 rpm max torque--is purely delivered by the internal combustion engine, but enhanced by a performance boost added by a battery hybrid system built by Rimac. Reportedly, the electric motor comes configured in a KERS-style boost system similar to those found in Formula 1 cars. This motor will be supplied by leading e-Drive technology brand Integral Powertrain.

In the Valkyrie powertrain, the Cosworth-built engine and transmission casing act as stressed members of the vehicle structure, with the latter serving the dual purpose of providing improved structural rigidity while removing the weight of an additional rear subframe.

Meanwhile, the battery pack integrates all relevant systems while also carrying the vehicle's power electronics.

The e-motor on the other hand, aids the gearbox mechanics in addition to its Power Boost and Energy Recovery System functions.

Suffice to say, many key components serve more than one function, alluding to Aston Martin's intelligent engineering.

The result of all this multi-tasking is an exceptional full-hybrid system that adds 160 hp and 280 Nm to the certified peak power output, so the aforementioned 1,000 hp becomes 1,160 hp, and 740 Nm at 7,000 rpm becomes 900 Nm at 6,000 rpm.

"Aston Martin Valkyrie is set to be the ultimate hypercar in the automotive world and these performance figures underline that statement," said Vice President & Special Vehicle Operations Officer, David King. "Red Bull Advanced Technologies, Cosworth, Rimac and Integral Powertrain Ltd. have been fantastic partners in the development of this powertrain, ensuring that we have already created a hybrid system that is emissions-compliant and ready to begin fitting to our first physical prototypes. I am, as I’m sure the rest of the world is, incredibly excited to see and hear the first of these cars on track."

Under the guidance of Aston Martin Lagonda, Red Bull Advanced Technologies and project partner AF Racing, the Aston Martin Valkyrie continues its development.
