Though Toyota Philippines has not introduced any major update in its best selling pickup, the Hilux, it still manages to lead the charts. Toyota sold 15000 units in 2017 and the pickup is also on the list of 10 best-selling cars in the Philippines. The 2018 version of the Hilux, which was introduced in February carried the rich legacy of the pickup in an effective manner. It is offered with two engine options. The first is a 2.4-litre, 4-cylinder diesel unit that churns out a maximum power output of 147 hp and a peak torque of 343 Nm. The second unit is the 2.8-litre 4 cylinder that thumps out 147 hp of maximum power and 343 Nm of peak torque. The pickup faces tough competition from the likes of Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max, and Mitsubishi Strada.

Toyota Hilux Review
Toyota Hilux OverviewAs Toyota describes it, the Hilux is a "tough & powerful" pickup truck by every inch. Be it its appearance, interior, or the mechanical bits & pieces under the glamour. The Hilux is one true pickup truck that is every-ready to take on the roads, trails, or whatever you throw against it. Toyota Motor Philippine offers the pickup truck in the country in as many as fourteen different variants, and the price ranges from Php 829,000 for the entry-level CAB & CHASSIS variant to Php 1,808,000 for the range-topping CONQUEST 2.8 4x4 A/T model. With two potent engine options, automatic and manual gearbox choices, 4x4 drive options, superior towing capacity, solid appearance, and a comfortable & convenient cabin, the Toyota Hilux can be had in seven different colors, namely Nebula Blue Metallic, Attitude Black Mica, Freedom White, Silver Metallic, Gray Metallic, Crimson Spark Red Metallic, and Orange Metallic depending on the model you choose.
Toyota Hilux InteriorHop inside the Toyota Hilux, and you are greeted by a well laid out cabin that features ample space, decent comfort, and all of the tech & convenience that you are ever going to need. To start with, we see a multifunction steering wheel with satin chrome accents, dashboard with similar satin chrome trim pieces, fabric upholstery, numerous cupholders, smart keyless entry with push-button start/stop, and all four power windows. Furthermore, the cabin also flaunts the likes of a semi-digital instrument cluster with MID, illuminated entry system, automatic climate control, seatbelt warning, key reminder, and a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with DVD, tuner, MP3, Bluetooth, USB, AUX, navigation, and as many as six speakers. While the Toyota Hilux misses out several trendy and conventional elements like support for Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, leather upholstery, and a few more, the Japanese pickup still hold enough arsenal to become your first or even second pickup truck with much ease.
Toyota Hilux ExteriorBeing a pickup truck, the Toyota Hilux packs in enough muscle to show off from is appearance. The pickup truck stands 5,345 mm long, 1,855 mm wide, and 1,815 mm tall, which helps it in boasting a rather menacing stance. Moreover, a wheelbase of 3,085 mm makes sure that there is enough space inside the cabin even after the large bed behind. Speaking of the styling and features present on the outside, the Hilux gets a wise sporty & muscular multi-slat grille flanked by a pair of large LED headlamps that also incorporate stylish LED DRLs. Then we have LED fog lamps, muscular front bumper, wide tyre overfenders, sports bar, side steps, tailgate graphics, stylish tail lamps, chrome door handles, powered ORVMs with turn signals, roof ornament, blacked-out B-pillar, up to 18-inch alloy wheels, and many other attractive elements. The Toyota Hilux might not look as sensual and seducing as the Ford Ranger, but, the Japanese pickup truck sports enough jewels to grab the eyeballs and make its presence felt on the road, as well as trails.
Toyota Hilux Ride & HandlingThe suspensions setup on the Toyota Hilux features double-wishbone with vertical upper and lower control arms for negative chamber boost at the front along with a leaf spring rigid axle at the rear for better vehicle damping and much comfortable ride quality. A rack & pinion with power assist steering wheel further makes the Toyota Hilux an easy to manoeuvre pickup. On top of that, the ride inside the Hilux even for the occupants is going to be a plush one thanks to the comfortable seating with more than decent cushioning.
Toyota Hilux Engine & Fuel ConsumptionToyota offers the Hilux in the Philippines with two different engines options, both diesel-fed. All the 4x2 models of the Toyota Hilux in the Philippines come housing a 2.4-litre four-cylinder 16-Valve DOHC Variable Nozzle Turbo with Front Mounted Intercooler diesel-fed engine that generates 147 hp of maximum power at 3,400 rpm and a peak torque of 400 Nm from 1,600 to 2,000 revs. This same engine also makes 343 Nm between 1,400 and 2,800 rpm the J and C&C models of the pickup. The 4x4 models, on the other hand, get a larger 2.8-litre four-cylinder 16-Valve DOHC Variable Nozzle Turbo with Front Mounted Intercooler motor that is capable of making 174 hp of maximum power at 3,400 rpm alongside a peak torque of 450 Nm from 1,600 to 2,400 rpm on automatic and 420 Nm from 1,600 to 2,400 rpm on manual variants. Transmission options on the Toyota Hilux include a six-speed automatic with ECT, a six-Speed manual, and a five-speed manual especially for the J and C&C models. The 4x4 models of the Japanese pickup truck feature an auto disconnect differential at the front and a built-in differential lock at the rear. Different models ride on 15-inch steel, 17-inch steel, 17-inch alloy, and 18-inch alloy wheels.
Toyota Hilux Braking & SafetyIn simplest of words, the Toyota Hilux is one of the more sturdy and safe pickup trucks out there in the market. The ladder-on-frame chassis along with a firm suspension make for a dependable pickup. Moreover, braking duties are taken care of by ventilated discs at the front and leading-trailing drums at the back. And, that's where Toyota should up the game by introducing disc brakes on all four ends. Other safety features present on the ever so popular Japanese pickup truck include front-side-curtain-knee SRS airbags, ABS with EBD & BA, Vehicle Stability Control, Active Traction Control, Hillstart Assist Control, Trailer Sway Control, Child Protection Lock, ISOFIX seat mounts, high mount stop lamp, side-door impact beams, back sonar, Toyota Vehicle Security System, and parking sensors with a reverse camera.
Toyota Hilux VerdictEven though low fuel-efficiency and the fact that the Toyota Hilux misses out on some trendy & nifty features, it still makes for a great option in the segment and the high sales figures further justify the claim. So, if rock-solid pickup truck with impressive powertrain options, host of modern-day features, and superior all-terrain capabilities is what you are after, go no farther than your nearest Toyota dealership and get your hands on a Hilux. Moreover, with as many as fourteen different models on offer, there is something for everyone to pick. But then, if you need more, there are always the likes of the Ford Ranger waiting for you in the shed.
