Whoever thought that the era-defining box-type design of the '80s would make a comeback in today's sleek- and curvy-centric times? The Toyota HiAce, Mahindra Enforcer and Suzuki Jimny has certainly enjoyed robust sales with the style revival, and now a Michigan startup vehicle company, Bollinger Motors, is also cashing in on the trend with a lot of success.
Bollinger recently showcased the beta prototypes of its all-electric SUV and pickup truck. The unveiling of the Bollinger B1 SUV and B2 pickup truck is the next big step as the company gears for the mass production of said vehicles.
Back in 2017, after just a few short months of operation, Bollinger accumulated 10,000 reservations for the B1. And that was only during the vehicle's early stages of development.
The beta prototypes share a lot of design cues with the original Land Rover Defender, with both cars full of straight lines and sharp edges. Other nice touches include riveted panels, exposed hinges, horizontal sliding windows, and crisscross headlight grilles.
The B1 and B2 are the world's first all-electric off-road and on-road vehicles. Built on the company's Class-3 truck platform, the two cars are pretty much identical, save for the SUV/truck configuration. Both are equipped with a dual-motor powertrain that delivers 614 hp and 906 Nm of torque. That's good enough for a 0-100 kph acceleration of 4.7 seconds, 160 kph top speed, and 3,400 kg towing capacity.
Market-leading capabilities include 15-inch ground clearance, 10-inch wheel travel, and 2,268 kg payload capacity. In addition to their off-road credentials, these electric haulers are engineered to be road-legal throughout the world.
