MDPPA Biking

The Motorcycle Development Program Participants Association Inc. (MDPPA) has shared notable safety tips for motorcycle riders who will be braving long trips atop their motorbikes.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What acronym can help riders remember their pre-ride inspection checklist?

The acronym T.C.L.O.C.S. helps riders remember what to check before hitting the road.
  • How can dehydration be dangerous to riders?

Per MDPPA, dehydration can be dangerous as it can lead to fatigue, reduced concentration, and even heat-related illnesses.
  • With that, let’s check out some of the safety tips from the country’s premiere motorcycle association.

    MDPPA

    Pre-ride bike check

It is important for riders taking on long journeys to conducting a thorough pre-ride inspection of their motorcycles, which is made easier by remembering “T.C.L.O.C.S.”

T.C.L.O.C.S. will help riders inspect tires and wheels for proper air pressure and condition, the controls to ensure they are working correctly, the lights and electrical systems, oils and fluids, the chassis, and the side stand and center stand.

    Travel light, smart

It is important to bring your travel necessities when one will go for a long ride. Nevertheless, one must make sure to pack light and pack smart.

According to MDPPA, it is best to use secure and waterproof saddlebags, tank bags, and top boxes. It is also vital to prioritize safety gear, like helmet, gloves, and riding jacket, and pack versatile clothing suitable for different weather conditions.

Riders will only have limited space, that is why maintaining a balanced load is important. Packing smart enhances the journey's safety, comfort, and overall experience.

    Be mentally prepared

While having the right gear is crucial, being prepared mentally when traveling long distances on a motorbike is also important. Cultivating a positive and adaptable mindset and anticipating the challenges of the ride are also paramount.

MDPPA also reminds riders to acknowledge that the open road is unpredictable, and unexpected detours or weather changes are simply a part of the adventure.

It will also be helpful to recall the three fundamentals of safe riding, which are recognition, judgment, and reaction.

    Keep hydrated

Keeping hydrated is important for a long motorcycle ride as dehydration — per MDPPA — can lead to fatigue, reduced concentration, and even heat-related illnesses.

Carrying a refillable water bottle and stopping at convenient intervals to rehydrate should be considered.

Proper hydration not only ensures good physical well-being but also keeps the mind sharp, enhancing one’s overall safety and enjoyment throughout the journey.

    Use wireless equipment, maps

Because of the advancement in today’s technology riding long distances is now made easier.

Using Bluetooth communications systems not only keeps riders connected with others but also allows for hands-free access to essential information like GPS directions and real-time weather updates.

Similarly, digital maps and GPS apps on a rider’s smartphone or dedicated GPS devices provide the advantage of real-time route adjustments, making it easier to find scenic byways, avoid traffic, or locate the nearest fuel stop.

“There's nothing quite like the thrill of embarking on a long ride to explore uncharted territory, especially in a country rich in tourist destinations. With the holiday season upon us, more motorcyclists are gearing up to embrace the two-wheeled freedom that opens doors to places they've never ventured before,” MDPPA wrote in a press release.
