Ferrari Classiche Turns Back the Clock on 275 GTB Competizione

Ferrari Classiche Department, the Italian supercar maker’s first-class restoration service arm, showcased one of its most recent restoration projects, a Ferrari 275 GTB Competizione with chassis number 09027. When the car arrived at the Classiche workshop in Maranello, Northern Italy, it was well-worn and well-loved, to say the least.

The car arrived repainted in a red overcoat, despite its original color being Giallo Fly yellow. It also had mismatched air intake lengths, an out-of-place shock absorber, and ill-fitting replacements, not to mention the bodywork was reshaped in certain areas. Putting it mildly, the guys at Classiche had their work cut out for them.

Fortunately, the restorers relished in the challenge, and now, the vehicle is back to factory standards, not to mention more expensive than ever.

Chassis no. 09027 has a storied past. Leaving the factory on June 14, 1966, it raced at the 24 Hours of Le Mans four days later, nabbing second place in its category. Even then, the car received tons of updates, especially to the cooling and lighting systems, to make it race-worthy. It also won at the Mont Ventoux Hillclimb, and got damaged at the Marathon de la Route race at the Nürburgring. All of this happened within the year it was sold.

The car was sent back to Maranello for repairs, which were done by the car's original builder, Carrozzeria Scaglietti. Amateur driver Patrick McNally became the car's second owner, opting to change the exterior paint from yellow to silver. McNally raced the car in the 1,000 km of Montlhéry, where it suffered a serious crash. It was fixed and painted again, but not by Ferrari. From there, the car changed hands multiple times until it was sold at an auction in 2004.

Ferrari did not specify when exactly the car fell back onto its lap, but confirmed it was a few years after the 2004 auction. Regardless of the many beatings that it suffered in the past, the important thing is that today, the car is back in pristine condition, and pictures are available for us to enjoy.
