Going to Pangasinan this Halloween? Beware of the White Lady on the 'Killer Road'

There's a one-kilometer zigzag road that trails many of western Pangasinan's beaches and resorts. Known as the "killer road", many blame it for numerous accidents and deaths that occur here every year.

Nearby residents and towns-folks have a suspect on who's causing these calamities: a white lady.

"May nakita kami dati nung bata pa ako na white lady diyan... Natakot kami... Kapag dumadaan ako diyan bumabalik 'yung takot ko (When I was a kid, we once saw a white lady there...We got scared...Whenever I pass by, those fears return)," said tricycle driver Joey Ibañez.

Many people also blame it for the strange occurrences that happen here.

"Pista ng patay noon biglang bumigat 'yung tricycle ko kahit dalawa lang kami nung sakay ko (It was All Souls' Day, when my tricycle suddenly weighed heavier despite having two passengers on board)," narrated Bernard Canonico, another tricycle driver.

A "Haunted Past"

It was during the '70s when a woman was killed and thrown over a cliff near this road.

"Pinabendisyunan na namin iyan dahil sa mga naaksidente (We already had it blessed because of the victims)," said Ramonito Sabido, chairman of Barangay Poblacion.

According to ABS-CBN, seven vehicular accidents have already occurred on this road just this year alone.

"Human error or mechanical error ang nakikita nating sanhi ng aksidente. Minsan nawawalan ng kontrol kasi mataas (Human error or mechanical error are seen as the cause of the accident. Sometimes, there's no control because it's so steep).," according to Police Lt. Fredwin Sernio, chief of Sual police.

"No cause for fear"

Whether or not these accidents are attributed to something more "otherworldly" remains to be seen. Despite this, the Catholic Church advises everyone to pray for those who died while driving on the 'killer road.'

"Hindi dapat ginagawang katatakutan, dapat inaalala natin sila sa pamamagitan ng pagdarasal... Mag-alay tayo ng dasal para sa kanila (It shouldn't be a cause for fear, instead, we should remember them through prayers...Let's offer them a prayer)," said the Director of Beato Juan Martinez Pastoral Station, Fr. Oscar Roque.
