Hyundai Ioniq 6 gets 2023 WCOTY title

Hyundai Motor Company’s (HMC) electrified model Ioniq 6 was the recipient of this year’s World Car of the Year award.

The announcement that the aforementioned model bested two other finalists (models launched last year) was made at the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS).

Apart from winning the prestigious award, the nameplate also received the World Electric Vehicle and World Car Design of the Year recognitions from the jury of 100 automotive journalists from 32 countries.

The latest set of accolades marked the second time that the brand took triple honors at the World Car Awards. Last year, it was the Ioniq 5 that was hailed as the winner in the same categories.

“We are thrilled to receive this prestigious honor two years in a row, which recognizes the tremendous talents and unrelenting efforts of everyone at Hyundai Motor Company to bring EVs like Ioniq 6 to market,” HMC President and Chief Executive Jaehoon Chang said.

“This honor reinforces our commitment to be a global leader in vehicle electrification and will serve to embolden our efforts as a smart mobility solutions provider.”

For his part, Hyundai Global Design Center Head Sangyup Lee expressed pride with the latest feat.

“We always want to connect with customers on an emotional level and with the design of the Ioniq 6 we have created truly one of a kind. The daring streamliner styling combines strong emotional appeal with aerodynamic efficiency to give exceptional range,” he said. “Inside, we set-out to create a personal studio which offers mindful space and calm functionality which, we believe, elevates EV design.”

Per Hyundai, the Ioniq 6 is the second model in the Korean automaker’s dedicated all-electric lineup brand, Ioniq. It takes full advantage of a bespoke Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) architecture to offer 800 volt, ultra-fast charging capabilities for a 10-80 percent charge in just 18 minutes and a spacious interior.

Additionally, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 is said to be one of the most aerodynamic and energy efficient EV models to date, with its ultra-low drag coefficient of just 0.21. When fully charged, the vehicle can cover 614 kilometers based on standards set under the Worldwide Harmonized Light-Duty Test Procedure. The standard two-wheel-drive option that is fitted with an 18-inch tire achieves WLTP-rated energy consumption of 13.9 kWh/100 km.

Further, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 features vehicle-to-load (V2L) technology, driver assistance systems and advanced connectivity with over-the-air (OTA) software updates that offer the ultimate in-car experience. Guaranteeing space is the 2,950-millimeter wheelbase.

Moreover, the model also comes with a dual color ambient lighting, speed sync Lighting, EV performance tune-up and electric active sound design (e-ASD), to enhance the electric mobility experience.

It can be recalled that Lee was also named by the same group as the 2023 Person of the Year for his contribution in the creation of the Ioniq 6, all-new Kona, and the N Vision 74 rolling lab.

Furthermore, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 also achieved a five-star safety rating and ‘Best in Class’ selection in the ‘Large Family Car’ category from the European New Car Assessment Program.

To note, Hyundai plans to launch 17 new battery electric vehicle (BEV) models by 2030, including Genesis luxury brand models, and aims to boost annual global BEV sales to 1.87 million units by then.
