In the know: Things you need before you get a motorcycle

nmax-mod

Motorcycles are one of the most popular means of transportation here in the Philippines. Not only are they fuel-efficient; they’re also more affordable, especially when compared to the country’s available four-wheeled options.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What is the license restriction for motorcycles?

The driver's license restriction for riding motorbikes is A.
  • What important gear should you secure before buying a motorcycle?

Two of the most important gear include the helmet and a pair of shoes. However, you should also consider getting a pair of pants and a jacket.
  • Because they’re typically easy to own, many are eager to sign the paperwork and ride their motorbikes out of the dealership. However, one must remember that there are a few things to consider and secure before hitting the road atop a steel steed.

Today, we look at some of the things you’ll need before you get your own motorcycle.

    1. A license

First and foremost, you’ll need a driver’s license.

A driver’s license allows you to use the public roads based on the restrictions on your permit, in which case, you’ll need restriction A. Per the new driver’s license codes, restriction A allows an individual to drive a motorcycle, and just in case you’d want to drive a three-wheeler, you’ll have to secure a permit with an A1 restriction.

    2. A good helmet

Wearing a helmet is essential to your safety when riding a motorcycle.

The Philippine helmet market offers no shortages of headgear with various styles for various needs and for people with different budgets. Despite the abundance of “budget-meal” options, a helmet is the one riding accessory you don’t want to skimp on.

Although many motorcycle dealerships offer helmets as a “freebie,” I personally suggest that you invest in a good helmet made by a good brand and to buy from a trusted retailer.

    3. A pair of sturdy shoes

Like a helmet, it’s also important to get yourself a pair of sturdy shoes. Not only will it save you from penalties (yes, you can be apprehended for wearing flip-flops when riding a motorcycle) but it can also save your toes from dismemberment.

As with helmets, the market offers plentiful products that you can use to protect your feet when riding a motorcycle. There are even shoes made specifically for such purposes with reinforced points in various sections to help you avoid damaging your trotters.

    4. Practice

Whether it’s by riding a friend’s motorbike or by enrolling in a riding school, it’s important that you familiarize yourself with riding a motorcycle, and if possible, riding your preferred type of bike.

    Final thoughts

Now that you have the basics down, it’s time to hop on the saddle and floor the throttle (responsibly). We suggest that you hook up with friends who ride motorcycles on your first ride, not only will it be a fun barkada experience but you’ll have your friends to look to should you encounter any difficulties on the road.
