It's Official: The Mazda 6 MT is Dead

Yes, it's true: The manual transmission-equipped Mazda 6 will not be resurrected starting 2019. So far, all Mazda 6 lineups remain unchanged, save for all variants now using the automatic as their standard transmissions. Reports say it's just for the U.S. market, but Mazda has still yet to confirm (or deny) if other countries will be affected as well.

This is confirmed by Mazda's spokesperson, who cited decreasing demand for its demise:

"At Mazda, we are always listening to our fans, especially when it comes to what they are looking for from our vehicles," the spokesperson told Jalopnik via email. "As we have moved the Mazda 6 upscale with the launch of the Grand Touring Reserve and Signature models, we have seen less demand for a manual transmission option."

"We continue to support enthusiasts who enjoy driving with a manual transmission in the all-new 2019 Mazda3 Premium Hatchback model, and of course the ever iconic MX-5 Miata," the spokesperson added.

Whatever the case, it's a sad day for stick lovers who are still clinging to that faded illusion that manuals have a shot in making a comeback. And since the Mazda 6 is such a promising vehicle both in performance and price competitiveness, it's a double-whammy of automotive misery.

But still, there's a light at the end of the tunnel. According to Car and Driver, they might be available as special orders in the future. MSN.com further confirms this in their report. According to a Mazda spokesperson, the company will pay attention to what customers want, and that if "their desires should change in future," the company will respond accordingly.
